What is the recoil of the .40 S&W compared to a .357 Mag? Does the .40 recoil more or less than the .357 Mag?

The .40 S&W I'm lookin at is the Glock 22. What's the recoil like with the G22 or a XD40?

I have a Ruger GP100 .357Mag with a 6in. Barrel

I have a CZ40B and I think the recoil of the .40 to be pretty tame. For example doubletaps 125gr gold dot is ~1425-1450fps in my 2.75" Ruger security six...there is A LOT more recoil in the Six than the CZ shooting 155gr JHP's! I also have a S&W model 27 w/6" barrel...the same 125gr load in feel much less since the barrel is longer and the gun weighs about 1lb more. Recoil in and of its self is a pretty subjective thing!

The recoil from the Glock 22 doesn't seem any worse to me than that of the .357 but I have noticed more muzzle flip which leads to taking a little longer to get back on target.

For me, no comparison. .357 Magnum has considerably more felt recoil than a .40 S&W. That's even when comparing a 6" Model 586 Revolver to a much lighter Glock 23. Out of the G22 I wouldn't think the recoil would be bad at all, as it was tolerable for me out of the smaller G23.

YMMV but I think this one is pretty clear.

It all depends on the gun.

Out of my 8 3/8" Pre-27's, super hot 158 grn reloads are pretty mild.

Out of my 5" 40 md96, super hot 180's (near 10mm levels) kind of kick pretty good.

In questions like this you have to consider the launch platform.

It depends on the action type, weight and barrel length among others. All things being equal, the .357 has more felt recoil.

I shot a compact glock 40 with green box remington ammo. I don't remember it being any different then a .45 full size pistol.

not tryin to get off topic but i dont want to start another thread......

Is there a .22 coversion kit for the XD? And what do you have to do to change from .40 to 9mm beside change the barrel and mag?

The XD40 wasn't all that bad on recoil... had a decent flip to it but nothing too bad... If you haven't shot either I would have to say go with the tamer round first...

For me the 357 mag recoil is much more substantial than any 40 S&W I have ever fired. You mentioned G22... I am a fan of the G23. I have a G22, but prefer the G23; so the G22 stays at home for the most part.

I like shooting 357's also. Most of the shooting is with a GP100 or Colt Trooper Mark III for me. I have a few other handguns that are 357's. I just don't shoot them. I honestly forget what I own. I have to look at a written list to be able to assemble a list that is more than about 60% complete. I have traded a lot of guns in the past and sometimes things blend together memorywise and remembering each gun is not all that important to me.
