Well I finally bit the bullet, so to speak, and ordered an 1851 Navy .44 from Cabelas (because I heard they genuinely care about thier customers). Now, I dont consider myself particularly recoil sensitive but I like to know as much about any situation I'm getting into as possible, so I'd like to know what the recoil of the gun is like (equivilent to, etc., etc....). Any help would be appreciated.

The only time I really have recoil to be noticed is when I'm shooting 40gr. of Pyrodex P and a 200gr conical. Thats a serious load and not recommended for an open top like the Colt.
With 25-30gr. and a ball they are a real pleasure to shoot and just enough "BANG" and recoil to make it fun.:)

Recoil is similar to pointing the gun into a strong headwind for a moment.

I shoot a .36 with 20 grains of Pyrodex P and an 88 grain ball, and there's NO recoil, FWIW.

Let us know how it treats you--I'm planning on getting the 12" Remington at some point.

60 grns of Pyrodex in my 44 walker is a nice smooth push. It has a great rolling "boom" down the range though. I shot 108 rounds yesterday and nearly every one turned heads.....

:) :)

Jeez... i shoot 60 grains in my 50cal Hawken.
Then again, a Walker is a true "hand cannon".. and the first one.

I am now loading 30 grains of Pyrodex P in my 1860 army. Recoil? none that i can notice, but it rolls nicely in the hand. It'll also put a 451 ball through 2 inches of oak!

Hey.. if 'Clint' doesnt flich.. why should we?

BP doesn't "kick", it sorta shoves. Well, except the 90 grains of BP in a .50 cal rifle. It will kick a bit. :D Never shot a Walker. Biggest BP revolver I have is a Ruger Old Army. However, I don't think the walker could be any worse than 20 grains of Aliant 2400 behind a 300 grain JHP Hornady XTP out of my 4 5/8" .45 Colt Ruger Blackhawk, or worse yet, same load out of my Contender. That'll wake you up!:D

40 Grns FFG in my Pietta 44 Rem Gunslinger(4 3/4 "BBL)has some serious recoil. but nothing that you can't handle. I found that out when it broke my first(mock-up) rammer at the keeper slot due to the way I had made it. it is a little better with the conversion cylinder in it shooting 28 grns BP.
