Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I am leaning towards a FN FAL for a rifle. My question is: how much recoil does it have? I have shot a M16a2, if that helps to describe it.
It depends on which FAL you're talking about and how the gas is set.
An all steel FAL in the 9+ lb range with the gas set properly is a real ***** cat. My SA58 Para with it's lightweight aluminum lower recoils a bit more but is still not uncomfortable by any means.
It is more than a .223, but as M1 Shooter said not uncomfortable by any means.
I have a full-size and a 16.25" para, and I'd echo the statements that recoil is more pronounced than an M16 (which is quite minimal), but nothing that should dissuade you from buying one. With the gas system properly dialled in you get a degree of recoil reduction, I suppose -- at least I feel like I get less recoil from either of my FALs shooting 150 grain M80 ball than I get from my Garand firing 150 grain M2 ball at basically the same velocities.
I am on the right, not a small man. That is a picture from NTC in March 2002. You can see the flash suppresor and MILES gear. I have live fired: M16A2, M249, MK19, Glock 17, M2, and an AT-4 (once). But beyond those nothing. I thought about a AR15 simply because I would be comfortable with it. But, I just do not like its tight tolerances and religous cleaning schedule. When I was in Kuwait (2003) mine was always gumming up on me.
Well, I don't think you'll have to worry too much about having to clean it as religiously if you just plan to use an AR15 as a range rifle. Kuwait is a bit more extreme than you're local Plink n' Boom.
On the other hand, though, if sh*t does indeed hit the fan, you'll be wanting a reliable rifle that is also versatile. The .223 isn't good for hunting for sustenance, and the AR would be questionable in those conditions. The FN-FAL is a good choice.
I wouldn't worry about the recoil. Pretty flat. No more than a regular, run of the mill, standard powered center fire rifle. But after firing the M2, AT- 4, and MK 19, it shouldn't be anything.
