So picked up a Weatherby Orion O/U in 12g on Friday. Took it out on Sunday to play with it a bit. Put a little over 7 boxes (175 rds) through it in around 3 hours at the trap range, and it beat me up quite a bit.

Anyone have any suggestions for some nice replacement recoil pads that will fit nicely on the Orion stock? I had planned to make this my dedicated trap and pheasant gun, so it's going to see a lot of rounds.

Its an SKB built one just to note. Have been looking at one of the grind-to-fit limbsavers to try out but on the lookout for any other recommended ones to try as well.

Limbsaver, Pachmayr, and many others all make a good recoil pad; however, what do you mean when you say it "beat you up"? - There may be a different issue involved, like cast, pitch, toe, drop at heel or comb, etc.

pachmayr pads look a little sharper than the others. the exposed core (with all the x's on the sides) is more cushiny than the ones with a hidden core.

the limbsaver and kickeeze pads are softer and soak up more recoil, but they look a little goofy.

oneounceload- To clarify "Beat me up" meaning that my shoulder was quite tender by the end of the day and shoulder was very sore. I wouldn't attribute it to being any fit issues. Just plain rearward recoil (a tad of rise at the butt but barely any at all). The Orion actually fits me extremely well.

Was looking at the buttpad on the gun, looks to be 3/4" thick. Must be glued on though, no screw holes, that's kinda a bummer, didn't want to have to put this under the drill yet.

I had also looked at those shooters friends. If I put their thinest one on there, it would only increase my LOP but a hair but it would still be within my comfort range.

You should have screws holes - they will be in the form of small and hard to see, "x" slits. Get a small Phillips and use a little liquid soap - the slits should be about 1/4 of the way from the top and bottom of the pad. If it isn't a Phillips, then use a flat blade (most seem to be Phillips). Once removed you can remove the stock for cleaning the action, etc.

If your shoulder is sore, then you might not be placing the butt in the "pocket" of your shoulder just right. Another thing is ammo - find a nice light 1oz or lighter load running about 1200 fps or so, and your shoulder will thank you

Definitely going to run some lighter loads that I made through it and see how it is. I also did try some different placements on my shoulder, didn't really seem to matter, but it also could've already been too sore for me to notice the changes.

And that's my dumb moment of the day, found the two mounting holes, someone had put a dab of silicone in the slit and it sealed it perfectly and it blended in well.

Also another stroke of luck, the through hole for the mounting bolt into the tang is 7/8", I may toss an Edwards recoil reducer in there and see how that works too.

If it has any thickness at all to absorb recoil, then it most certainly does add LOP

No, it does not add to the LOP as it contours your shoulder, and is wide to disperse the felt recoil. Check the links that I posted. The pad is a slip on.

I checked your links and I am familiar with the product. Since it slips over the existing butt area, it MUST have SOME thickness on the part that presses against your shoulder, otherwise there is no point to the product in trying to absorb recoil

ANY slip-on product will add to the LOP since you are not shortening the stock

You said that you are familiar, but have you ever used it? What little thickness at the center, actually is unnoticeable because it is a gel and the contour of the pad fits snugly into my shoulder and the recoil spreads the pressure outward across the pad which has a wide spread. The pad compresses with the recoil.
I have been using it for 2 1/2 years over the existing stocks .. all youth & 20 gauge because I am small boned 125 lbs, 5'5" and can't take much recoil. I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis several years ago. This pad made it possible for me to compete in a SG match recently and shoot 150 rnds and not have a sore shoulder the next day. Most other pads add considerably to the LOP unless you replace the existing pad. I haven't found anything that reduces the felt recoil like the pad I use.
