I picked up a Hardballer Longslide, and I strongly suspect it needs a new recoil spring -- not only does the slide rack too easy, but the slide batters the frame violently when firing.

I of course have no documentation on this pistol, and cannot find any old factory parts anywhere.
I did find a reference that claimed, depite the long barrel, it still uses a standard size spring (I will have to open it up and peek when I next get home).

Of course, standard size, but standard strength as well? that extra 2" of slide adds a lot of weight, so would the spring need to be a different strength to work best?

Thanks,

Keith

Well..I took a closer look at the longslide internals. The recoil plus is approx 4" long, and the first 2" are solid. So...since it is a 7" version, that two inch plug probably means I get to use a standard size spring. Nice feature.

Still not sure if the extra heavy slide means I should go to a weaker spring, or a stronger one.

The heavier slide will require, and use more energy to get it moving backwards, so the force backwards will be less ( leaning towards a lighter spring), but of course the extra mass of the slide will take more to stop it ( like a stronger spring).

Can any physics masters point to which would be correct? ('cuz I'm definately not one...)

I helped my Dad finish a longslide project back in the 80's. He had a dewat slide and cut off the useable end, and welded that to an existing slide. Bottom line was, It worked with stock spring with a longer than stock guide rod pretty well, since the slide soaked up a lot of the cycling energy. It's recoil felt very different than a stock 5"er, more of a "chunk-chunk" feel because of all that mass. I would contact Wolf Spring, and check out what thay have available. I bet they make the correct spring.

Hardballer info

I used to own an AMT longslide like yours, and am now looking for another one actually. But I am replying because this guy Ian has a great info site oin AMT firearms, including scans of owners manuals and such. Hope it helps. I also remember replacing the recoil spring in mine with (I think) a standar Wolff spring...90% sure on that, but it's been around 16 years ago so....anyway, here is the link to Ian's site.

Whoops

Sorry, surfed in and didn't noticee this was an old post. Still hope the info helps and glad to sign on. Seems like a good board.

If this helps, a standard length 18 pound test weight spring, chrome moly or stainless or music wire, whatever strikes your fancy, will cycle the longslide just fine.
