I'm finally ready to drop the coin on a custom rifle. I'm going to go with a Surgeon 591 action paired to a 22" Bartlein or Kreiger Barrel chambered in .260 Remington. I don't need the other goodies to build the rifle (already have top of the line stuff), I just need a barreled action. Now to the question...

Who are some highly recomended gunsmiths with fair prices and short(er) lead times? I talked to GA precision and they are looking a year out!

What about Kenny Jarret? Would he build one your way? My only 2 excursions into custom land went from Ok on the first rifle (Its a tack driver ) to absolutey rotten on the 2nd rifle. They were put together by the same guy. I would caution you to beware of basement , backyard, garage, and "I was a tool & die maker for 49 years custom gunsmiths. Make sure they have good references and real gunsmithing training with credentials. Its your money, your rifle, your safety, and your the customer. Also waiting too long is ridiculous. What are they doing? I dont care if someoout out there gets their dander up but how are these guys making a living if they cant deliver the product in a timely fashions. Are they mining the ore and waiting for the tree to grow?

PS: I discovered a gunsmith that was trained at a school , by his grandfather a retired general purpose type gunsmith and the USMC as an armorer at a Gander mountain store who repaired the 2nd rifle and made it right. He also did the warranty work on a new Remington 700 Classic that involved setting the barrel back and all related operations. Dont overlook Gander mountain they do have trained smiths. This one that I use is at Gander mountain in Twinsburg , Ohio. Say what you want about Gander but this guy made these rifles right as rain. You can always interview the person and get references.

I wound up going with GA Precision after all. The quoted lead time was for a fully built rifle, but I only need a barreled action. Leads for that were 4-6 months. I asked about the long lead times and they said that they are just that busy. They have added several new smiths over the last year and a half but they are still running that far behind. That must mean they make a top quality, high demand product.

GA builds the kind of rifles I'm buying all the time, and I've gotten many good reviews from their customers. I've spoken with Karey Bruner at GA many times over the recent weeks about this build, he's been extraordinarily helpful in helping me decide what I want/need for my purpose.

I wound up going with a Templar action and a 22" Bartlein in .260 Remington. They are also going to cerakote it black.
