Recommend a Can for 22

I’m looking to order a 22 suppressor next week. Still no idea what I want. I was originally hoping to get out the door for around $200 (plus the stamp), but after looking at a few with my FFL I'm finding that this price range will get me something with aluminum baffles that won’t last as long as a better one with more steel or titanium materials. So now I’m considering bumping the budget up to the $300-500 range - might as well do this right if I’m going to spend so much time waiting on it. Though I’m still not opposed to keeping it as cheap as possible since it is just for range plinking.

The primary host I will be using will be my Sig 522. This gun takes 50 round drums and is loads of fun to shoot really fast, so I want to make sure I get a can that can handle a really high round-count between cleanings, and is as easy as possible to disassemble when completely fouled. I was originally hoping for one that would have an easy quick-detach system so I could easily transfer it to other guns down the road, but it sounds like I’m not going to get quick-detach in this price-range. Just needs to be easy to mount and secure on the standard AR threading of the Sig522. And lastly, I’m not sure how much variation there is between the sound-quality of 22 suppressors, but one that is nice and quiet would be good too. I assume that’s not too much to ask with a round like 22LR.

So please recommend your top suppressors for 22. Budget of anywhere from $200-500, but preferably on the lower end.

Wow - I expected a bit more traffic on this one. Having to do my own leg-work now. :p

After my brief research so far my top candidates are:
  • Silencerco SS Sparrow (any good reason not to go with this one??)
  • Liberty Kodiak TL (made in my home state of GA! Looks very similar to the Sparrow, but slightly more expensive due to titanium components? hmm...)
  • SWR Spectre II (cheaper and looks harder to clean, but I read that it may be quieter than the others. Any truth to this?)
I would still appreciate any input or other suggestions. Thanks

The standard Apex has an MSRP of $299 but my local dealer's price was $225! Pretty sure the Apex has an aluminum core but the Apex-S appears to be stainless. Check with the mfg to be sure-they are good folks.
 
I don't currently have any silencers, but have a few (my first) at the dealer's, waiting on the ATF.

Did as much research as I could before buying - I got a Sparrow SS and AAC Element 2 for my 22s - the plan is to use the AAC on the pistols, the Sparrow SS will be for my 22 rifles, particularly a 15-22.

I like the design of the Sparrow - looks easier to assemble / disassemble and clean. I think it was Silencerco that has a video of tests with various cans thru various guns with the db reading across the bottom of the screen.

Their Sparrow SS sounded quietest to me, on the 15-22 and the db readings seem to back it up. The AAC Element seemed quietest on the Mosquito, etc, and the readings also seemto back it up.

I may also try some welding anti-spatter spray on 'em to help with easy cleanup? I see no reason why it wouldn't work, assuming it's even necessary.

I quickly tossed out the aluminum only types - if I have to go through all the hassle / time / paperwork / money to get one, I want it to be the longest lasting unit I can find (i.e. stainless guts, etc).

'Course, this is coming from someone with little / no hands on experience - these silencers will be my first.

I try to research first, buy second...

I think your research is right on from what I see. I'm in the research phase now and I'm planning on going with the Sparrow. The only real negative I've seen posted about it is the "first round pop" in pistols. Some think it's a faux problem though so...ymmv.
 
^^^Thanks for the link! That may seal the deal on Sparrow. Looks like they also have a great price on the Osprey45 which is the other one I'm planning to go for at this time. Good stuff!
 
I have the AAC Ti-Rant...got a deal at my LGS where if I bought 2 AAC suppressors they "threw in" an AAC rimfire suppressor. That Osprey is nice but I fell in love w/the light weight of the Titanium AAC can.

The package deal just made it easier for me to pull the trigger (so to speak) on the purchase.
 
Its pretty hard to find a suppressor that performs any better than the Sparrow, in any category, other than price.
 
I'm really quite happy with my Huntertown Guardian. Yes, it has aluminum baffles.

BUT...

It is under $200.
It is very quiet.
It is warranted for life.
It has no "first round pop".
It is rated for automatic fire.
It is user-serviceable.
It can be upgraded to stainless or titanium, either at purchase or later.

So you might want to take a look at it.
 
Since the Huntertown Guardian 22 comes with a lifetime warranty, why would you assume that the aluminum baffles "won't last as long....?"

I'm using the Guardian 22 and like mine just fine.
 
Since .22lr is very dirty and your can will need cleaning often, I went with the Silencerco Sparrow for its easy disassembly.

No regrets.

Something that doesn't come apart as easily will need more frequent cleaning.
 
i would go with the Spectre II instead of the Sparrow to avoid first round pop, and for ease of dis-assembly.


that being said, I own a Thunderbeast 22L-1. will take a few thousand rounds before it needs to be dipped to be cleaned. and yes, its the "dreaded all over internet land" sealed 22LR suppressor. its also magnum rated and will handle 17HMR.

if i were to own a take apart 22LR can, it would be the SPectre II.
 
I am an AAC fan based on performance (their price is good too) but my favorite rimfire silencer is the new all Stainless Sparrow SS.

With rimfire you will have a lot of cleaning to do and nothing is easier to clean.

before you say that with absolution.... have you ever cleaned a Spectre II?



here is an interesting write-up. one thing to remember is that both the Sparrow and Spectre II have thread spec idiosyncrasies that need to be addressed on your host weapons.

I too have to say the sparrow, mine is currently in nfa jail but i know from demoing and research it's the right one. I was stuck between the spectre ii and the sparrow for the longest time and the sparrow being the absolute easiest to clean sold it for me. The sealed baffles with the clam shell design was brilliant. Especially if you are planning on running 50 doing drums. You wouldn't go wrong with the spectre ii but the sparrow just was best for me.

Infact, I liked the spectre ii design so much I ordered the Octane 9 also, it's baffles are designed the same.

The small O-ring for the Sparrow threads can be removed it if somehow interferes. Doesn't on any of my hosts and does seem to help keep the can from coming loose when shooting compared to my Multimount or Osprey, although the difference could also be the recoil booster on the centerfire cans.

You need a "spacer" for most of the .22lr AR uppers as their threads on the barrel are too long.

Sure thing :D I'm hoping with good behavior they can be out in the three months. I just emailed my dealer and they stated that they are getting the 3 month turn around on eforms. A can e-filed on Oct. 22 was returned approved yesterday.
 
I vote for the Silencerco Sparrow.

$369 is about the cheapest I've seen, though.
 
I have the AAC Pilot 2 and it's awesome. Very quiet, fairly easy to clean, about $350.

If I were to get something else though, i would also vote for the Sparrow.
 
My innovative arms 22lr can works well and is short an light. The owner takes care of you and offers limited lifetime support. It is very quiet dry with 22/45 4 inch barrel and sr22.
 
I also have a Pilot 2 and have been very happy with it. I jumped on it when it went on sale for $275 about this time of year in 2012.

I've seen posts saying that they are older technology, but my Pilot 2 has been pure happiness and the price was right.
 
My sparrow was approved the middle of Feb buy I wasn't able to go pick it up until last weekend and I already love it. I shot it on my dads GSG 1911 and it was ridiculously quiet with CCI standard velocity and the rounds that didn't go supersonic from the bulk packs were not as quiet but still quiet. The FRP was nothing given how loud some made it out to be. The interesting thing was it was about 45 out so the bulk pack which usually don't go supersonic were about 3/4 of the time.
