I want to buy my Dad a knife with the following features:

1. Folding knife
2. Pocket clip
3. Screw driver
4. Prefer straight edge (not serated)
5. Strong construction (for torque on the screw driver)

*Leatherman makes two models. Anyone else?

You're probably not going to like my answer.

I don't like buying a knife (or any tool) that tries to be many things for convenience. For example, take the Topps knife used in the movie, "The Hunted." I'm sure someone likes the knife, they sell a lot of them.

But if I want a campfire knife, a caper, an axe and an SD knife, then I will purchase the best examples of those products--not a compromise tool.

In fact, I'm amazed that a Graham Razel works as well as it does.

I would find a knife that matches your lifestyle--a good one. Then I would find a screwdriver that carries the bits you need for your life or job and carry them in the handle. Lots of companies make that style.

Leatherman's probably your best bet...these don't look like much of a compramise to me... good knife with multi headed screwdriver flexability in a small strong package.

Victorniox Cybertool. I have the Cybertool 41. When I worked as a field engineer for an ISP/teclo, it replaced a large part of my toolkit. Very handy.

The screwdriver bits also happen to fit a lot of gun screws, too.

Leatherman is a good product, I have almost worn one out but I lived far out of town, and am a handyman kinda guy in many ways. Worked outside on ranches and in construction so it was on my belt daily over a period of ten years or so. Quite a versatile tool, from cutting barbwire to fixing your eyeglasses. The cutters are chipped the pliers bent slightly, screwdrivers and file worn but it still does a lot of work, Good product, and am working on a second one I wear when I am at the office or in nicer clothes.

I don't care for things on my belt so when I got the first one I thought I would wear it for three weeks and see what I thought. That was well over ten years ago and it has been with me 99.9% of the time ever since. I use it almost if not daily.

My choice is the regular model as it will do most things you need to do and it isn't as large so not as much in the way on yur belt. I find it an indispensable tool, I'd be lost without it.

Re: Versadriver.

I got into enough trouble as a kid without such a tool.
Oh the wonderments I could have done with one them as a wee brat.

Being an adopted uncle - I "have" to make sure some wee brats get some of these.

hso,
Since you and I have not grown up, just gotten bigger, I bet we can still get into trouble.

Navy Joe,
Do you like the Leatherman better than the traditional electrician's knife?

I have not seen one like yours, much less handled one, still it looks like something I need to check into, or recommend to others.

Thanks for sharing with a picture and link.

I have one of those Leatherman type knives. It's ok, but I don't like the design. The carabiner/bottle opener makes it awfully thick for what it is and I don't open enough bottles to justify it. The "Blade Launcher" is interesting, but you really have to nail the technique to make sure you get the blade locked as it isn't spring assisted. You have to just flick fast enough for it to catch. I much prefer the Kershaw Speedsafe opening.

IF you can give up the pocket clip I would HIGHLY recommend a Victorinox Farmer. I have several and one is always in my front pocket!!

They are a GREAT knife and one of the REAL bargains in todays knife world!

SM, by electrician's knife you mean? Nail nick folder with 1-2 screwdriver blades? If so, then probably I don't like the Leatherman. The clip does make it thick, I use it to hook on a belt loop. I bought it for the reason that it cuts boxes less menacingly than larger knives and I didn't want to goon up my SAK by overloading its screwdrivers. I have a larger SAK with the locking blade and I try to keep it nice. At the time I was using a knife and screwdriver many times a day.

I also think you should buy the tool that fits the job. I am not aware of a knife with a screwdriver that you can really put a lot of torque on it without breaking the knife.

My favorite is the Vic Adventurer for a general knife to carry that has tools when you have nothing else available. I also like the Vic Electrician which is a much larger (thicker) knife. No clips though.

Navy Joe,

Thanks for your sharing.

Someone I know was thinking of something else besides the classic TL-29 , as issued to those in the Military.

(first picture I snagged off 'Net)
This classic flat works!
He and his daughter use these everyday and have them in emergency kits too.
They were just thinking of a change.

I agree with the SAK offerings such as Farmer or Army Issue, and still suggest the classic electrician's knife.

What kinna screwdriver? If it's a flat you're looking for, just use the tip of your sodbuster.

(oh man I'm gonna get killed for that one)

I prefer the Gerber tools - in a pinch, I've found I can open mine one-handed and get to most of the tools (that's not a pair of scissors people it's a tactical extraction strap cutter).

Or an SAK, they're really nice. I personally prefer victorinox to wenger.
