Okay, everyone, I'm looking for a pocket knife. Here are the parameters:

* Under $100. Less expensive is better, but I don't want junk.

* 3 to 4 inches when folded, with a pocket clip.

* No serrations.

* No thumb hole -- has a stud instead -- and opens easily.

* Has a positive stop at the top of the grip, to prevent your hand from sliding forward onto the blade.

Does anyone make this knife?

Chris ~

Can you show me some pictures? I don't know knife terminology.

This has a hefty thumbramp (and meets your other requirements as well):

Image from 1sks.com. The "ramp" is the section directly behind the thumbstud. BTW, it's available in plain edge, though the pic is serrated.

A guard would be like the guard on a sword. AFAIK, only a few manufacturers use them and mainly for traditional knives like Case.

Chris

Ah, okay. Thumbramp it is -- but believe it or not, I think the one on the Griptilian isn't positive enough. I want one that is a little more hooked.

Pax, check out the SOG Flash II. I love mine. Large Thumb area on the handle, not the blade. Assisted opening system.

Go here to see all their folding knives. They also have factory seconds on sale (but I have found firsts cheaper on some websites).

I have owned mine for two years, my fiance carries a smaller model, the Flash I. Great blade, stays sharp. Tough knife.

This one has a big guard, but doesn't meet your size or price goals: am-sere-2000.jpg

This one meets the guard and price requirements, but is too large:

Maybe this one (Kaspar Fighting Folder)?

I've been out of the "knife thing" for a few years now, so I'm not up on all the new models.

Chris ~

What's the name of the CRKT you posted?

pax

The first CRKT is the M16 series, M16®-14ZSF Special Forces. Unfortunately, it appears that the one with the full pommel does not come in plain edge.

i have a crkt m16 identical to that sitting on my desk here. its a well made knife but they ground the blade way too thick...it doesnt get very sharp at all. my stepdad is having me grind the bevels back much further so it will actually cut well. if crkt did that from the factory it would be a nice knife indeed..as it is now i wouldnt recommend it.

A great knife for self defense

Hi Y'all;

This is my 1st post:)

I highly recommend you go to EBAY and type in "kerambit" in the search field.
They are inexpensive, legal everywhere, and very very lethal.

Just an idea that wont have you paying Cold Steel prices.

some of them come in folder type configurations, and others come in a sheath. Take a gander at some, and you will know that it is one mean, no-nonsense type of blade:)

Have a great Halloween!

I carry the M16-04Z.

Checkout seller blade-workscom on ebay. Tell him I sent you and he will give you a good deal.

Pax,

If you can find a MOD Keating Hornet for a good price, it'll fit your needs. They have a well defined "thumbramp". The only downside is price. The cheapest I've seen them is $150ish. That said, the design fits the hand well and was made for fighting, but would work well as a utility blade too.

Chris

I've never been an MOD fan. They remind me of a Microtech made by a committee.

After sharpening the current breed of folders this year, I'm getting more and more impressed with the fit and strength of the Benchmade Axis style folders.

I'm also quite impressed with the Buck Alpha Hunter folders. I personally have one of their ATS-34 models on lay-away. It's blade has been treated by Paul Bos and the action is very smooth. I intend to trade away the leather sheath for one of their ballistic nylon models.

-serrations

Yeah, I know it has a thumbhole, but it fulfills all your other requirements perfectly. It's a pocketknife truly designed for cutting.

this may not help but....

Also recommend the CRKT desert cruiser, except that it's too large for your parameters - the other CRKT with double guards, the M16, is smaller (but just as heavy as the desert cruiser, and uglier). I carry the desert cruiser when hunting (the non-special forces sub-model, though both are nice). Got it new for $44 plus tax.

http://www.crkt.com/dsrtcrsr.html Strangely, one of them in that pic has a plain edge, yet I don't see it offered as a specific submodel. ??? Are you sure you want plain edge? Because I've grown to love serrations (combo edges) - great for cutting rope and many other tasks.

For everyday carry, I use the Kershaw Leek assisted opener. It's got a bit of a protective curve, but not like what it sounds like you want. Got it new for $35.

TMM, your link doesn't work. And aren't the griptilians pretty well in excess of $100?

Rich,

Welcome to THR. I would be very reluctant to advise anyone other than a collector to purchase a kerambit.

"Legal everywhere" is unfortunately not true; there are many places where any folder with over a certain length blade- sometimes as little as 2"- is not legal for carry. Georgia has fairly generous weapons laws, but by Georgia law, knives "designed for offense or defense" are not legal for carry by non-LEO citizens, and the raison d'etre of the kerambit is conflict.

Yet another problem is the impracticality of the kerambit. It's good for a certain style of knife fighting, and little else.

pax, I know you don't want a hole in your knife, but for quality, value, and ergonomics, it's damn hard to beat Spyderco.

I think you should reconsider or at least get your hands on the Griptilian or Mini Griptilian. They meet your criteria other than maybe not meeting your needs for positive stop at the blade. These are nice knives, easy opening, solid locking on open, very sharp and pretty durable. They are pretty easy to keep sharp and with Benchmade you can always send back for $5 to have the edge brought back to factory original. IMO these are the perfect everyday pocket knife. You should at least try and handle one. Oh yeah, you can probably just about get 2 for your $100

I have a Griptilian already.

It's a good knife, but as I said above, the thumb ramp isn't positive enough for my taste. I want to find something with a more definite stop to it, similar to the Griptilian but with a slight hook or something.

pax

Pax, take a look at the CRKT Point Guard. The "ramp" is on the handle, rather than the blade, but is quite secure. The shape of it locks your hand into position, or at least it does mine. The small, unserrated version fits all of your criteria.

Chris

pax,

One more reco for the CRKT Crawford/Kasper folder, the small one. See the factory page at http://www.crkt.com/crawkasp.html . It has an extra lock which blocks the liner lock from being activated by your 'trigger finger' when the knife is open and thus makes it very secure. You will find the button for the extra lock placed on the thumb ramp where it offers extra purchase for the thumb and can easily be activated with the knife in the normal grip.

It has a VERY secure grip due to its handle shape, which is why my wife likes it. It sharpens well, and has a secure clip. If you want a small folding fighter, this is it.

I'll offer you a no-lose guarantee on this one. Buy one, and if you don't like it, I will pay you up to $40 for it and pay the postage for you to send it here as well. It's on sale at http://www.knivesplus.com/CR-6772-CRKT.HTML . Several other online discount places offer it for a bit more than $40.

Your call-
