I haven't even shot my cap-and-ball revolver yet and I already have the bug to trying building a single-shot BP pistol. I've built some modern firearms from kits and do okay so I think I can handle a BP kit.

Based on looks and price, I really like the CVA Hawken .50 cal pistol kit as a good starter kit. I saw a poster's finished pistol over at Gunboards.com and thought it looked really nice. My uncle is going to build me a North Carolina variant Kentucky rifle sometime this or next year and I thought this would go nicely with it.

1) Can anyone recommend a reputable online place to order from? So far one that seems to stand out is The Hawken Shop which carries the CVA kit for $127.95. I've seen them a few bucks cheaper here or there but don't mind paying a little more for a good store.

2) What size bullet is best for this type of pistol? Will I be using patches?

3) I already have a bunch of accessories for my .44 cal cap-n-ball revolver, are there any accessories I would need specifically for a single-shot pistol? About the only thing I notice would be a Bullet Starter.

Thanks in advance,

Thanks for the replies. I do like Dixie Gun Works ... everything you ever wanted.

I think I like the CVA Hawken kit better than the Deer Creek just because of the combination of steel and brass furniture. Purely a "looks" thing. Log Cabin Shop is nice too, but they don't have the Hawken kit.

So, I've pretty much decided on which kit I want (although I suppose my subject doesn't really say that). I'm just looking for a good online shop that carries it.

Thanks again,
LL
