I have a female co-worker asking my advice for a pistol. She will carry it in her purse and/or vehicle. I recommended 9mm or .380. She would prefer a safety but will be negotiable on that. A sig would be too expensive...a Mak would be too heavy.

So, recommend 9mm & .380's for a woman's purse.

Taurus Millennium Pro 9mm might work for her. Also has a safety if that's something she desires or feels more comfortable with.

So many choices today

Colt .380 Mustang or Pocketlite or Pocketlite pony many women LOVE these.
Colt .380 Hammerless model 1908 great feel and balance smooth lines
Kahr PM9 MK9 P9 K9
Springfield Armory EMP
Browning BDA .380
Beretta 85 .380
Smith & Wesson 9mm 6904/6906 many used PD trade ins to be found
Glock 19 or 26
Walther PPK/S
Walther P99Compact or S & W version
H & K P2000K
H & K P7
H & K USP Compact
Smith & Wesson M & P compact
Kel Tec P11
CZ 2075 RAMI
Browning P-35 Detective model
In my experience women are allot more selective and specific once they have experience in what choices are available for some weight is a concern with almost all balance and feel is a top concern.
Definately worth renting or trying out all one can before spending hard earned money.
I would also recommend to not skimp on the purse get a Galco or similar one that won't fall apart or drop the pistol.
With a purse one should carry whatever pistol fits & works best and not worry so much about every fraction of an inch or ounce.:D

Unless she's experienced with the function of an automatic, she really should be looking at a .38 or .357 snubnose.
If she's insistant, Kel-tec.

There are so many factors to consider. However, you are asking all the right questions. Does she want all steel? How about size of grip? Indeed, size has always mattered. Finish is always an issue since blue finishes can take a beating in women's luggage, er, purses. Do you want SA or DA? Is magazine/cylinder capacity a concern for her? Budget? We can never forget budget. Ease of cleaning? Will she ever target practice with it? Those all seem important questions to answer before making recommendations.

Why you might ask? The other day, while riding in the car with my lady friend, the matter of firearms came up and she made her wish known, "I want a pistol for my purse. Something small [gesturing with both hands maybe three inches apart]...like a .45." I turned to her in surprise. "What? What? Why are you looking at me like that," she said in response. I got the car back into my own lane.

You can never know what women really want (until you ask, write it down, and/or record it just to make sure)...

...Oh, by the way, don't you think it's coincidental that your female co-worker would just happen to consult YOU about a gun?

Very hard to recommend anything when you didn't even mention if she's ever shot a gun before. Some women would have no problem with recoil, but some women are very uncomfortable shooting any reasonably light 9mm, even a Glock 17.

I do think a Bersa .380 fits the bill perfectly, though. Everybody who has one of those loves it. Very comfortable, cheap, and reliable.

For carry my wife chose a S&W 642 .38 Spl over the semi-autos I was trying to push on her. Its a great little gun.

Sorry, I didn't give more info. She is not that familiar with guns. She has shot them before, but I had to explain the difference be the various actions.
I already gave her some choices to go and look at. If I recall right, I suggested the following:
1. .38 revolvers (Smith or Taurus) (NOT the uber light models)
2. Bersa .380
3. Walther PPK
4. Walther P99c
5. NAA Gaurdian .32
6. Kel-Tec .32
7. Kahr CW9 or K9..others (not the PM9...to much snap)
8. Taurus Mil Pro

I gave her a short description of pros and cons and my opinion on quality and warranty.
I also, don't like the idea of purse carry. If they must, I would suggest a Colt Mustang....but I didn't recommend it as they are quite pricey the coolness/mystique of the colt would be wasted on her.

I'm sure she will return with more questions.

Depending on her shooting experience, I would recommend the Kahr 9mm in the steel frame for a little more shootability. Since it's going in a purse, wieght & size may not be that big an issue, I'd also look at the HK P2000sk, Glock 26 and Walther 99's. But really my 1st option for purse carry would be a wheelgun, preferrably a j-frame ;)
Also, don't forget a good quality holster. I have a LEO friend that one day, in a hurry out the door just put her duty weapon in her purse. Somehow, when she reached in to get her cell phone, the weapon discharged & shot herself in the knee....she's okay now but still not something you need to happen & is TOTALLY avoidable.

Since you said she wants a pistol I guess I can't recommend a Snub Nose revolver.

Taurus Millennium PT-111 Pro in 9mm will probably fill her needs. You can buy one NIB for right around $300 and it will be reliable. My son has one and will not part with it!! http://www.taurususa.com/products/product-details.cfm?id=24&category=Pistol

If she finds a 9mm is too hard for her to handle they have the same pistol in both .380 Auto and .32 Auto. I'm sure the .380 Auto will be very manageable for her. http://www.taurususa.com/products/product-details.cfm?id=34&category=Pistol

For ultimate in small it would be a Rorhbaugh 9mm. Better be good for the $1k price tag! ($1295 list at my local ripoff dealer). Otherwise I vote for the Keltec P3AT, Kahr PM9, or better, wait until the Kahr PM45's hit the street.
