If you really want an autoloader, Ruger still has you covered. The Mk-III (or used Mk-II), the 22/45, and the SR22 would all be good choices (train with the trigger transition on the SR22, though.)
I was about that age in the Early/Mid '60s and
my first handgun was a S&W Model 18 K-22 Combat Masterpiece
it's the K(Medium) frame DA Revolver with a 4" Bbl.
It served me well on our 300 acre farm in Central Wash. State.
Used model 18s in good shape are $500 or more,
S&W came out with it's "Classic' line but only had the new 18 out for a
year or so, a Current production 617 with a 4r" bbl. would
be an excellent choice It's all stainless steel.
In autos the Ruger and Buck mark are good choses. My first hand gun (at 12 years old) was a K 22 now a S&W 17. The Ruger Single Six is also good and now is what I have in 22. I now prefer a revolver in 22 lr as it is not sensitive to the power of the ammo and there is a lot of difference in the quality of todays ammo. Also the Single Six will shoot 22 mag if you need the extra power.
