I've had my 10/22 for about 40 years now. It started life as a Standard Issue 10/22, but I've swapped out the stock, had a trigger job done, put a threaded barrel on it . . . So here it is now.

It's absolutely one of my all-time favorite guns. That's a Nikon Prostaff II Rimfire on top of it. Unfortunately, that's really more of a target scope, and my 10/22 is really more of a plinker. With this rifle, I'm not looking to put holes in the holes in my target. I've got my Ruger American Rimfire Target for that. With this rifle, all I really want is Minute of Soup Can. So I'm thinking about replacing that scope with a red dot. I haven't even begun the search, but I'm hoping y'all can give me some guidance on this. What are the best bargains in red dots out there?

So, I had one on my Marlin 795 for a short while before I went with a magnified optic. Ended up passing it along to my father-in-law who mounted it on his 10/22 and has kept it there since I believe.

Call me vain, but I've never liked the look of a reflex sight or one of the mini tube red dots on a non-AR rifle. Just looks off. So, I ordered this one made by Hammers.

You will not mistake it for an Aimpoint or Eotech, but it worked fine and my father-in-law really likes it. The longer body, IMO, flows better with the traditional rifle style as it looks more like a scope.

Leupold as their Freedom RDS which is a similar style and obviously a nicer optic. All that being said, if you're NOT vain like me, there are lots of options out there. One thing you'll want to decide is if you want a reflex style or mini-tube style sight. Then, your price range will kind of dictate value vs dollar.

I don't know about bargain, Spats, but my set up is plenty good for soup can, and can work for you also:

That's a 10/22 clone with a receiver milled in the UK. It is called a Rimfire Magic.
The dot is a Burris Fast Fire 3, which has been flawless up to now. It is a nice low profile sight, used with both eyes open and it has fast acquisition of the target. The only additional item I had to get was a Yankee Hill Machine riser to get the dot up to ideal eye level.

There were two members selling the FF3 here on THR a while back, very cheap. It is well worth a look!

I have a Truglo reflex red dot. It is barely bright enough on it's highest setting to use outdoors. I thought I would throw this in just in case anyone is considering one of those.

I had my son’s 10/22 TD set up to swap between a Bushnell TRS-25 and a Nikon 4x scope. Worked fine as I recall but ultimately he preferred the magnification for better target scores. We used Warne QD rings and marked the rail to make swaps a return to zero affair.

Im still making incremental adjustments to my own 10/22 but it’s proving accurate enough to leave scoped for now. Took very little effort and zero dollars to see real improvement btw. Mine wears the similar Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 3-9x with reduced yardage fixed parallax.

If you’re heart is set on trying an RDS, the Bushnell makes for an easy, affordable transition that won’t visually overpower the rifle.

I really like my Primary Arms red dots. I've considered a red dot for my 10/22 but I really think I prefer at least a lil magnification for .22lr's. But if your just looking for minute of soup can a red dot would be nice and fast. I would definitely opt for something small, maybe even a Fastfire II or some other small hooded red dot from Vortex. Something really small would be my preference, and probably not very expensive....

I currently have a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire II on my 10/22, but .... It's just not a target rifle. I have my RAR Target for that, and it outshoots my 10/22 all day long, provided I do my part. So I've decided to return my 10/22 to its original purpose: Mass Murder of Soup Cans.

Burris TRS-25
Swampfox liberator
C-More railway

The C-More has very clear glass and allows you to change the dot module fron 2 moa up to 16 moa. Small for accuracy, big for speed. I have shot all three and the C-More is my favorite.

A little bit of a necro-thread, but I'mma post it anyway. I've got the Bushness TRS-25 in my cart. I have a question, though. The picture with the scope (on Amazon) says it has an "integral Weaver-style mount," but the description says it "mounts easily on most picatinny rails." So what do I need to mount this thing? (Yes, I know I'm showing my ignorance here. I'm OK with that.)

I own two Ruger 10/22 rifles. One is setup with a nice scope and gives great groups. The other is my plinker .22LR rifle with a red dot. My older eyes were having trouble with the factory sights. I took a gamble and installed an inexpensive Sig Romeo5 red dot on it. I am thrilled with it so far. Like you say, it is a minute of soup can and a great plinking setup. Battery life is very long and shuts itself off if I forget about it. I didn't find it nearly as unattractive as I expected. The rifle is circa 1984. A BX trigger group and a stock pad made the rifle shoot nice and fit me a lot better. Anyway...this is my setup with a red dot.

I put a Crimson Trace on my Charger. Shot a Squirrel Gun match with it Sunday. Won the AR type class, but I only had one competitor. OTOH, his Colt (Walther) .22 AR with a 16" wasn't holding up it's end of the deal, and neither was he. The kids with scoped 10/22's were shooting over 200, my best was 193 4x. That was with my Mossberg 44 with a Weaver 3/4" 6x on it.
