Would it make sense to get a ret dot for a marlin 60 whose intended purpose is SHTF-like scenarios. Thus moderate range critter getter and last ditch defense. I am thinking red dot (are these magnified?) or maybe an illuminated reticle or low 2X? scope for increased accuracy potential and speed. I would like to be able to rip it off if it fails and use the irons as a backup. Cost is a factor, I want it to be relatively cheap like the rifle. Any opinions or specific suggestions?
BTW...this is my 1st post, although I have been reading posts here for about a year.

I've got an under liscense version of the 60 that does its work with an 8 dollar BSA scope. Thusfar, its spot on. I was popping 12 guage empty shells at about 25-30 yards with one shot per shell. Two screws, and it slides off completely. Hard to beat.

I've personally given thought to buying a cheapo ($10ish) red dot sight to put on one of my .22s. Sometimes you just get tired of Elite 4200s and Leupolds and simply want some low-dollar fun! :) And hey, if it doesn't work out, I'm only down $10.

Right now I have a Bushnell Trophy red dot sight on my Bushmaster M17s. It has four recticles and 11 choices of brightness. I have been able to achieve sub-MOA accuraccy with the cross-hair recticle. It seems to be of high quality and holds it's zero regardless of recticle changes. I will probably put a variable power scope on my gun soon just as test for accuracy, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with my red dot and I could see at as a great choice for a SHTF scenerio, afterall that's why I have it on the M17 :D . I picked mine up at Midway for about $80 and I remember great service. I have used some cheaper BSA red dots in the past and I have not achieved the same success, but they work.
