I've been looking around at the Sig 556 rifles and notice that they currently include some sort of Red Dot optic. Does anyone have info on this optic, such as the manufacturer or any other info? Is this something that I'm going to need to replace with an Aimpoint later, or are these quality optics?

It's a knock-off. A "Lamepoint" if you will. :p

If you want serious optics for hard use, you'll need to look elsewhere. If you just want to use the optic to punch paper or to play around in friendly neighborhood "run-n-gun" matches then it would probably do just fine. The sight is allegedly manufactured by iTac, which is currently owned by SIG Sauer. Some people on the web insist this is a Chinese company, but one can only take that for what it's worth.

They're garbage! Get a SIG556 without the optics, and spring for the real thing (Aimpoint, ACOG, EOTECH etc) when you find the time. Keep in mind that you'll probably want to upgrade the BUIS also. The sights that come stock with the 556 are suspect as well.

I bought the the 556 w/ optic, and was very disappointed. I love the rifle, but the optic is a waste. It works, but it doesn't compare to the quality optics listed above.

The sight is made by Sig. They call it a "STS-081" and they sell it alone for around $200.

Now, I don't know if Sig is actually making it or they are OEM from somewhere else.

I suspect it's OEM but I have never seen who it might be that makes it.

CTD has them, among other places. CTD was just where I saw them.

The sight is NOT made by Sig.

It's an iTAC holosight with Sig's name on it. The iTACs are actually made right near Sig's outfit in NH. We order them seperately and sell them retail for $95.00 each.

The Sig sight just has you paying for the name. It's a good dot sight for the money - it's pretty tough, resistant to water submersion up to 3 feet, and quite accurate. Buying one from Sig is a ripoff though.

Well, TexasRifleman will probably back me up when I say that I have no problem spending money on optics. I'm trying to get a reasonable assessment of that Sig sight. I don't think all optics are either gold or junk. There's a pretty large spectrum.

I'm standing by my observation.

It's not a serious sight, the battery life sucks, it loses its zero when bumped, the adjustments are suspect at best.

Why waste the money?!

Plus, I'm a soldier. I guess I'm spoiled. I don't work/train with junk, and I'm trying to steer anyone from wasting their money on junk!

I have the Sig 556 that came with the holo sight. IMHO it compares with the mid priced units out there. It zero'd easily (3 shots off of a bipod) and held zero for ~250 rounds. Its certainly not junk (but not gold either). For me and recreational shooting, it works just fine. INstead of buying a more expansive unit - I'll spend the cash on mags and ammo.

I know that their 'Sig 556 holo' sights are actually made in China, just like Walther red dots and commercial EoTechs.

One of the businessmen in China that's vending all these sights to various brands in the USA is a personal friend of mine.

I haven't seen the STS-081s before, so I wouldn't doubt Darksword's word that they're made in the USA.

Paratroop23, I cannot afford eotechs, or anything like that - that SiG sight as listed on CTD is more expensive than I can buy - did you throw it away, or did you want to get rid of it?

PS, when I was in the service, we had LOTS of junk in inventory that we had to use, I still had tubes in my turret electronics. That was in '88.

Armoredman,

No, I didn't toss it. I'm planning on selling it whenever I get a decent offer. It's still a "SIG" sight, and I'm sure that someone out there would be interested. I haven't put it up for sell yet. I'm currently deployed, and it's been the last thing on my mind.

I would have to disagree with you about the Army issuing junk. I've been in since 97, and it's amazing how fast this organization has been rapidly adapting to the Global War on Terrorism on so many different levels. You'd be amazed!

5.56? Sir, we had 7.62x51mm M-14s! :) Oh, me, owning the SiG? I wish I could afford one, my personal EBR is a VZ-58, with a junk holosight on it now, going back to the factory.
Wally, my first job aboard ship was to help pull the tubes and replace them with transistors. My ship was decommed in '92, scrapped in '93.
