I think a red dot on a .45-70 isn't a bad idea. Particularly if I can be removed in the field and the original irons still used. A fast optic that can be used in low light against big scary animals.
That's why the replacement .45-70 I got from Henry is now set up that way.
I have a Red Dot Docter on AR MK 12 and a Trijicon RMR on my Benneli M4. I have the Leupold 1.5x5 with Warne QR lever rings on Marlin Trapper so I can quickly interchange in the field between the scope and Delta Pro using the American Defense QR mount
