Hi Guys
I'm getting a "scout" type rifle built in .338-06 and was debating between the IER scope or a red dot sight. The red dot I'm looking at is made by Burris and has a 3MOA dot. The IER scope is a Leupold.
I would take it hunting for deer/elk/bear at ranges of 200yds or less.
Which one would be better for hunting?

Does any one use Red dots for hunting?

I also have a Guide Gun in 45-70 and thinking of the same type set-up for hunting the same animals at the same ranges.
Would the Leupold be better on the 338-06 and the Red Dot on the Guide Gun, or the other way around?

Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreicated.

If you are trying to make a Jef Cooper scout, his design incorporated a low power fixed magnification scope forward mounted. The red dot is not magnified.

With a 3 MOA dot, you're looking at never hitting better than a 6 inch group at 200 yards, and that's under ideal circumstances, using a bench, etc.

Get the Leupold if you are hunting. Don't make the animal suffer.

TechBrute,
The only thing that closley resembles the vitrues of the scout concept on the rifle I'm having built is the forward scope mount.
AND
The average kill zones for the animals I would hunt are around 6 inches, so is that a plus for the red dot?

I understand that the red dots have no magnifacation, The Leupold is only 2.5, which aint much.

Col. Cooper's Scout concept does not require a scope. If you met the other criteria - which I understand you are not trying to do - you could use irons, red dot, or the Leupold.

I'd think the Leupold would be a good choice for your application. The red dot would be much faster up close, but less precise at distance. You can fire nearly as fast with the 2.5x Leupold if you practice shooting with both eyes open. This is effective to about 100 yards, depending on your skill level.

Either way you go, I think you'll like the concept.

Great choice on caliber too. I've always like the 338/06.

I prefer the ier as you get farther from 50yrds red dot tend to loose thier advantage, which is primarily rapid aquisition and large feild of view. Both of which are not needed as much at that range. I do recoment that if you go with a red dot you keep the dot size small. My guide gun from wild west wears an ier. My ar's and a few other fun guns were red dots.

A red-dot type optic at the ranges you are talking about is really only for fast accusition tactical targets (ie:wounding or killing people) and will not give you the accurate shot placement you would need for efficient hunting.

IMHO- A true scope, while not having alot of magnification....... will allow you to better place your shots (unless you are engaging multiple hostile deer!)
