I am looking for ideas on how to use some kind of red dot optic with an A2 carry handle on an AR15. This could either be mounted in front of or on top of the carry handle. If you use something like this, I would appreciate a description of what you are using and how you like it. If you can also post a photo, even better!

Thanks in advance!

Hey Tex.

I have a bushnell red/green combo on my ar15 handle and I like it. I used a good quailty base that screws directly into the chanel of the handle and the factory peep sights are still useable. I have not range tested yet, but the testing at home works well. You might find the mounting to be a bit high at first, but I got used to it VERY quickly.

Hope this helps,

I would suggest, if you attach a red-dot on top of your carry handle, to get something to raise your cheek up on the stock. Personally, I would get an adjustable stock like that one put out by magpul, but that may be out of form for your purpose....

An Aimpoint Micro in an A.R.M.S. #2 mount works very well for me:

It's fairly low compared to other sighting systems that mount on the handle, and the irons are right there if you need 'em.

Here's mine. It's a Bushnell Trophy red-green dot mounted with a $10 aluminum rail that attaches to the handle in the groove. It's hollow, so you can still see the iron sights through it. I really love the scope, and having it mounted on the handle. For me, being mounted there is much faster, more comfortable, and more "natural" feeling than mounted on the receiver with the handle off. When I brign up the gun fast, the scope comes up right into my vision, and I can keep my head/neck straight, insted of having to cock it to the side and keep it low like i would if it weren't mounted on the handle. Most people sem to feel the exact opposite, and prefer them on the receiver, but not me.

Here is another option:

This is a cheap 30mm RedDot from CDNN (~$25) and an add-on hand guard rail (~$10 at a gun show). I think the rail expects to go on the bottom but I put it on the top. I don't remember if these are the rings that came with the scope or some other 30mm medium rings I had on hand, but the co-witness is about as good as I can hit with iron sights. I added a dab of JB Weld fore and aft when I reinstalled the hand guards as there was a bit of wobble on this gun out of the box.

You can always shim the rail when you mount it if your rings aren't tall enough, if its too high you'll need shorter rings :)
