I've got a 5M serial number Garand that is a mix-master with no acceptance stamps or anything to make it at all significant. Rough Greek wood stock so it'll get black Syn stock. I'm going to convert to 7.62 NATO and I'd like to mount a modern sight. So which one and which way is best?

You know Trijicon sells the RMR. This may come pretty close to actually co witnessing your iron sights on one of those Scout modle forward mounts.
Just an idea that might need a bit more research.

There is a sight base that replaces the rear hand guard that I feel would be the best. Unfortunately, I do not remember the manufacturer. CMP used to sell them but not currently. It means you would need a long eye relief optical sight.

There is another base that replaces the rear sight and clamps to the front of the receiver. I have one and was not impressed. I never shot my M1 with it installed. I put the original sight back on the rifle.

There are actually at least two manufacturers now:

A Leupold or Burris scout scope in the 2.5x range would work well as both have an intermediate eye relief . . . I understand Weaver now has a 4x version; don't know how well it would work, as I imagine field of view is small.

I set up on eof my Garands like this - works pretty well, but it is front heavy.

I want to do the same, but rebarrel to 35 Whelen. The second photo on the ultimak link shows a cowitness setup with an aimpoint micro. I think that would be a great way to go.

How far forward would a Doctor Reflex have to be to get a clear dot and sight picture (sort of like minimum eye relief)?

S58, it ain't blasphemy as they made millions of them and I have a 1M serial number that stays all original. I just want a 308 M1 also and I'd like to trick it out a bit :) And, I'd like to try an alternate sight system

The Ultimak rail would be nice since it is the lowest one available, and is low enough to get a co-witness with a tube-body red dot in a low ring, and possibly with some of those mini red dots out there. If you want a cheaper one, CMP sells one that is made for them by Amega, and IIRC is only around a hundred bucks.

I would also consider a Scout scope, as has already been suggested. That is by far the cheapest, easiest, and most effective way to mount a scope on the M1. That's what they should have done in the first place with the M1 C/D!

Either way it will be a fast-sighting setup... it's just whether you want it more optimized for close range, or medium range. One thing I would watch out for on the red dots is dot size. The M1 is an 800 yard rifle, and even a 4 MOA red dot would completely obscure a man-sized target at 500 yards. Lots of them have an even bigger dot, like 7 or 8 MOA. THen it's as big as a dude at 250-300 yards or so. I guess if you were co-witnessed, you could just use your irons at longer range, but still, if I went with a red dot on mine, I would go with something with a 2 MOA dot, like some of the Aimpoints have. I am personally liking the Aimpoint PRO, and will probably be picking one up before too long.

Yeah, I'm leaning toward the UltiMAK as it's very neat and tidy, replaces the upper hand guard and will look good with a black syn stock. I can see this coming together nicely :)

I agree with smallest dot. What's the lowest dot sight (height mounted)?

At my age (well over a 1/2 century) and with my glasses, the M1 may be an 800 yd rifle, but I'm not shooting beyond 300.

The lowest optic you can get would be any 30mm tube-bodied optic (which all the full-sized Aimpoints except for the Comp M4 are), mounted in a low 30mm scope ring.

Was hoping that some had a built-in rail clamp as part of the tube forging so I could forgo rings?

But we are on the right track here :)

1KPerDay - thanks - very interesting reading in thread 2 :)

Yeah, the Aimpoint Micro T1 or H1 has a built-in mount. It too will co-witness. That would definitely be the lightest weight option. FYI they have 4 MOA dots.

Got another option recommended by OpticsPlanet - Burris Fast Fire II. Supposed to be the lowest out there. Depending on what the factory sends for dimensions, I may just drill and tap the rear flat on the UltiMAK and direct mount. See the two screw holes in the picture - very low mount. May co-witness perfectly? Keep the irons and flip on the dot for closer in or fast fire :)

So far no un-reversible options which is nice for the "save the history" crowd

I think that with high serial number receivers and non-cartouche stocks, maybe replacement barrels - in other words no pedigree - this will become a growing interest and parts market?

Sights that work at dawn and dusk for older eyes when hunting, or at the range on various target scenarios - the red dot or scout scope make perfect sense :)

Looks like the Delta Point and the Burris both screw down to the modified base? Seems we are chasing the same goals with differing tactics :)
