So I am in the process of putting toys on my AK, and I am interested in adding a red dot sight. Problem is, all of them seem to be 5moa, which seems too large to me....is that the norm? what do you guys have? I guess I just think it would be hard to be accurate (im sure it would work for silhouette size target, but how about clay pigeon?) past a hundred yards with a dot that big....on the other hand, maybe i need to do a reality check and remember that I am still shooting an AK, no matter how much I change the look.

On my Arsenal AK I use a COBRA sight, It has worked out pretty well. I figure a russian sight for a russian gun. It's battery life is no where as good as our mil grade stuff but it has 4 different reticles and one of them is a 1.8 MOA dot. It should be small enough for clay pigeons at 100 but. Check out this site for russian military sights.

I use 5 MOA red Dots on many guns, from 22 to 12ga shotguns.

As far as accuracy with the typical AK I don't believe whether using a 4 or 5 MOA Red Dot would make any difference.

Anyhow this is what a inexpensive 5MOA BSA Red Dot will do on my Bushmaster M4.
The accuracy depends more on the gun than whether you use a 4 or 5 MOA Red Dot.

There is a misconception that says the dot size has anything at all to do with accuracy. In fact, the front iron sight post on any rifle is far wider than 4 or 5 MOA, and people use iron sights to shoot 1 MOA groups. It's a matter of using a very consistent sight picture, no matter the type of sight.

Aimpoint makes several models with 2 MOA dots, and the EOTech standard A65 reticle has a 1 MOA dot.

I use a 4 MOA dot Aimpoint for aerial clays with an AK here (note the cliff as backstop, please):

Some AKs will shoot MOA or slightly larger, it depends on the individual rifle and of course the ammo.

Shooting silhouettes at 300 yards is fairly easy with a dot sight and a run-of-the-mill AK firing Russian ammo.

I have a couple of Millet red dots. They are 3 moa. They work well for me.

when using large red dot sights large moa i mean i have a technique that i use, that i discovered in the military while using the aimpoints with 4moa. i use the tip of the dot when i zero and when i want to hit more precise, and i use the whole dot in cqb engagements. that is why i like the eotech so much 1 moa you can use the whole dot all the tiem and there isn't a problem.

red dot sight is best suited for shooting quickly at large moving targets at close range with both eyes open - brightness adjustment further allows for quality sight picture in varied lighting conditions

the further you get from that model, the less well-suited the red-dot sight becomes

EOTECH is a fine sight - rugged, with excellent ergonomics and battery life

You have an AK, smaller than 5MOA is ..."optomistic". :D :neener:

as for the clays, iffin' you can handle a rifle, it can be done even with an AK.

BUT you really, really need to know yer gun. (...and use ammo your AK "likes". )

100 yards is about the limit with AK's tho.

i disagree, for a few reasons, but i have had good luck with mine and my dads ak's at 200yds prone unsupported and sitting with wolf 154gr sp they are the most accurate rds surplus wise that i have shot in my ak. and though the ak is no where near as accurate as other rifles, 20rds out of 20 where in the right shoulder of the shilouete. of course i adjusted the sights after that. pretty good for a "crude" weapon and "crude" ammo.

Look into the Russian military PK-AS sight- it is a no magnification black dot (no power) red dot (power) sight with three mounting options available-( side rail offset, side rail centered, or weaver) It has a one MOA black dot with a 65 MOA circle around it, Or powered up, an adjustable brightness 1.5 MOA dot within a 65 MOA circle. The adjustments are in MOA, and the thing is built Russian tough. About $200, try Tantal for more info. A very nice sight for an AK.

I've used the TruGlo on my AR and love it. After a few lesser brands fell apart the TruGlo is still going strong! I'm going to put the same Red Dot on my Tactical AK

The Best Dot Is No Dot....

Though on the higher-end of red-dot optics, my suggestion is looking at a red-dot without the red-dot....Go chevron young man!

Having friends with a variety and a willingness to lend them to me when I got my SOCOM-16 was a bonus for me. After testing the Aimpoint Comp and Eotech on the high end and a Bushnell and Tasco on the lower end, I went with what I believe to be an often overlooked and for my purposes, superior red-dot optic - the Trijicon Tripower.

The chevron recticle is a thing of beauty - tip of the triangle for pinpoint shooting - cover with the triangle for battlesight-zero. It has no tendancy to wash out - no mirage and 3 sources of power, (batteries, available light and tritium). In your search for an optic for your AK, there are a lot of choices in a variety of price ranges. IMHO, you owe it to yourself to check out a Tripower....
