I can't see well enough anymore for bullseye shooting. I'm thinking of a red dot sight for my Smith 41 for conventional bullseye match. I know nothing about them. Anyone have advice and recommendations? Size of dot?

Google Ultra Dot. Check out the newer Match dot by Ultra Dot. It has adjustable dots. I like mine very much. No buyers remorse with the expense.
If you buy a Ultra you get a life time warranty. Larry's guns did a fine job on cost and shipping.
Don't forget a scope mount.

For bullseye shooting you want a small dot (3 or 4 MOA). I've been using an inexpensive BSA (around $25 on sale) for the last 8 years and it works as well as a $200+ sight. The more expensive sights may be more rugged but bullseye doesn't require a sight to stand up to getting dropped or knocked around like one that would be used on a hunting firearm.

I'd agree with that, except in the case of a red dot sight being mounted on a .45 slide. Had a Bushnell Trophy fail on me fairly quickly.

I'd vote for Ultra Dot. Best price/quality ratio IMHO. Been quite happy with them (and Larry's guns as a vendor).

Some of the less expensive dots can be a bit "fuzzy."

I'm using a really cheap XTA on my DanWesson that has about a 2MOA dot. Mainly using it because it's such a small unit compared to my Tasco and BSA units. The dot is abit fuzzy and may not work well for bullseye.

This Millet red dot is very nice, but it's a 5 MOA. Works very nicely and is easy to shoot with.

What's the word on these:

The Ultra Dots have less distortion in the red dot. The scopes have less parallax error. Life time verses five year warranty.
In Bullseye shooting a little miss is alot.

I know MAYBE one person who shoots bullseye without a dot sight, and he's an old cop who uses a K-22 revolver.

Dot sights completely own NRA Conventional Pistol.

I use a 1" UltraDot. I find that the 1" tube is both lighter and has a smaller field of view. Large field of view is no advantage in bullseye. The targets don't move around and seeing too much just distracts you.

I highly recommend a 1" UltraDot. Try Larry's Guns. They also service what they sell.

Yeah, it's ugly.

I've been using an ATN UltraSight Digital Reflex sight for the last two years. I shoot rimfire gallery (545 +-5 in a 600 series), with good open sights. I've been in the 560's using this nicer dot sight this season.

It's the best thing I've used yet. Allthough it's a bit (OK, a lot), heavier than some of the others out there, it is clear and bright, but when light is low, turning the intensity down when on 2moa, the dot is so small you can barely see it. I turn it down to almost it's last setting for slow-fire, but I bump it up twice for timed/rapid. I have thousands of rounds through this platform without one issue with the sight. I can't say that for many other cheaper models I have tried or have seen on the line. The Big BSA's are a waste of money. These cheap Chinese made ones for $39.95 are even worse. They just don't last. I've got a Tasco ProPoint tube style that still works. And my nephew has been using a Simmons with a 3moa or so, that has lasted quite well.

I'm not sure I want to switch to the ATN UltraSight Digital Compac because the dot only goes down to 4moa.

I thought I wanted to switch to the newer UltraDot /LT, http://www.ultradotusa.com/ultradot_dist_blue_009.htm

But a buddy bought one a couple weeks ago and couldn't get it to hold sight properly. -So that one is still under review.

The Doctor is the cat's meow! But pricey. Still only a 3.5moa dot. With degrading eyes, a 2moa dot won't do you any good anyway.

Back to that ATN UltraSight Digital... No special tools to mount it. (A quarter for the screws), No special tools to adjust it. (A pen knife screw driver), You don't have to remove the sight to change the battery. (same quarter)

Can't say that for some of the newer smaller units out there. (Sure the BSA/Simmons/Tasco other tube style have these same features, but some of the newer units require metric allen wrenches and a dial thingy to adjust them. Sorry, not something in my Bullseye box.

My old budget bullseye rig, the Bushnell Trophy scope actually worked really well. But if you can afford it go for the Ultradot

BTW nice Model 41 :)

Another recommendation here for Ultra Dot Match Dot and Larry's Guns. I currently have 6 of them mounted on various guns that I use for Bullseye, including one that gets slammed around on the slide of my .45, and I've never had a lick of trouble with any of them (and if I ever do they've got a lifetime warranty).

As others have mentioned, the parallax error is small and the ability to change dot sizes on the fly is very nice as well. Several shooters on my Bullseye teams have them and many of us use the 2-minute dot for slow fire and the 4-minute dot for the sustained fire stages. I happen to have the 30mm tubes, but I'm sure the 1" version is fine as well.
