Redhawk Grips HURT! I need BACKSTRAPS!

Ok... I've got a .44 stainless redhawk, and she's got a MEAN bite. Any grips that don't have a complete backstrap are out of the friggin question! So I've been using Pachmayr Decelerator grips, which soak up the recoil nicely... but I don't like the way the finger grooves are setup. What other options do I have?

Uncle Mike's used to make/market a Craig Spegel-designed Redhawk grip in Santoprene - I have these on my Redhawk, and prefer them to either of the Pachmayr options(Presentation or Gripper). Search for a used or new-old-stock(NOS) set on any of the gun auction sites, or Butler Creek may have picked up the old Uncle Mike's line.

Pachmayr makes their presentation grip for the Redhawk, good for sucking up recoil. Beware however this grips is huge, so I hope you have big hands.

The other option would be to get padded shooting gloves, uncle mikes and past make good ones. They do a great job in helping with felt recoil.

I actually don't understand why Ruger doesn't redesign the Redhawk to have one of those stubby grips like the Sp101, GP100, and SRH. Seriously. They coud standardize on the same size as the GP/SRH, and make things niiiice and easy for the customer, along with taming recoil becuase EVERY grip would cover the backstrap.

But noooo....they have to stick with this outdated exposed backstrap deal from the era of the security six....

(not that I don't love the security six and lust for a 6" model daily. I just think the Redhawk could have used an update as long as they were bringing out the new 4" models anyway.)

Hogue's are you best bet. Try Ruger's web site and see if they sell the grips, forget the name, sorry, that cover the back strap. They will have finger groves.

I agree with you in that they look the nicest, but using any loads that have some boom to them they tend to slid all over the place in my hands. This usually results in one of my fingers crashing into steel somewhere.

But man, you would be hard pressed to find nicer looking grips. (also shooting gloves help a lot with the stock wood grips for both grip and recoil absorption).

The Redhawk grips "roll" in my hand. I find them as comfortable to shoot as rubber grips as long as it is not a lot of shooting.

They did redesign the Redhawk...it's called the Super Redhawk! When the SRH came out, it was supposed to replace the RH, but the RH was popular and already in the pipeline, so they decided to keep it.

The difference has to do with the mainsprings in the grip...Redhawk's springs are different than GP100, SP101, and Super Redhawk. You can't interchange them. I might have this backwards, but i believe the RH has a single spring where the GP, SP, and SRH all have double springs. The mainspring housing is different, and thats why their grips are different. Take the grips off a Redhawk and one of the other revolvers and you'll see what I mean.

Here's my 4" .44 mag Redhawk with Pachmayr Presentations. I put these on when I'm going to be shooting a lot of heavy .44 mag loads. They're big and beefy and soak up recoil pretty well. They take the sting out of shooting .44 mags that I used to get when shooting with the factory Hogue Bantams that left the back strap exposed.
