Which is another way of saying that any given box might contain chicken feathers, or a Ruger, and there's no reason to think that the Ruger will go missing rather than the chicken feathers. It's just a box... and statistically they all get to where they are going. Perhaps one in a million (literally) doesn't. Even that is probably a high estimate based on talking to a few people who work for FEDEX and actually know. These guys are pilots, and have no reason to BS another pilot.
But: I guess it's all a matter of your personal acceptance of risk. I insure risks that I cannot afford to take. LMy house? (which I did in Sandy, actually)? That's something to insure. To lose a $400 handgun? <yawn>...
With that said, I've never had a FEDEX package go astray, insured or otherwise, but obviously your actual mileage may vary.
