I've seen a few videos on youtube of people bump firing semi-auto AR's and AK's, but I haven't tried it because I heard it was illegal and the ATF considers your finger a machine gun if you do it? Is this true?

If so, I wonder if anyone here has a full-auto registered pre-86 finger... cause I'll buy it... I'll just hack off my trigger guard and super glue the dried up finger stub to my finger and it will be totally legal! Heck, I'll even buy a full-auto toe if there are any for sale!

Seriously, can you get in trouble for bump firing? Any examples of anyone getting in trouble?

Welcome to THR.

Bump firing by itself is not a machine gun, it still requires one pull of the trigger to fire a round.

It is simply a way of doing that really fast, using the recoil of the rifle to help speed things up.

The only trouble you might get into would be if you were on a range where rapid fire was against the rules, or you let the bullets fly out of control; it's not exactly easy to aim a rifle while you do this, though some get pretty good at it.

Bump firing does seem a little silly.... but I might try it once for laughs if I wasn't worried about safety or breaking some obscure law... or someone's interpretation of said obscure law...

No you can't get in trouble for it (well, not with the feds. Some ranges don't allow it). Any semi auto can bump, some are easier than others.

You may have heard the discussions about the Akins accelerator where the ATF distorted their own rules since the definition of full auto is "more than one shot per function of the trigger" and they made it sound more like "one pull of the finger". The akins obeyed the rules but was basically a stock made for easy bumpfiring. People who bought the stock had to send in the spring to ATF and were left with a $1000 .22 stock.

If you want to try it make sure the range is ok with it and has a very high backstop. Even then, be very careful!

Pssst! I know a guy that knows a guy, that can probably get you that finga your lookin' for!

I'm not sure about a finger, but Walter can get you a toe by three o'clock this afternoon :neener:

There is one way it could get you in trouble.
That is if a casual observer such as a nosy neighbor sees or hears you bump firing and thinks you actually have some kind of full auto and reports you to the BATFE. Could this get your house searched? At least you would have some explaining to do.
I know a guy who used to be big in IPSC and could empty his compensated .38 Super race gun so fast that people thought he had a machine gun. Before a match he test fired a magazine through it so fast that several spectators came around to see who was firing the machine gun.

IMO Bump firing is nothing more than a juvenile stunt that wastes ammunition. No way can you reliably hit anything that way.
