I need some help with loading a 308. I am using a 150g sierra and would like to use IMR4350, because I have quite a bit, but can not find a load. Please help.

I thought the IMR was "magnum" powder. It's a slower burning one I know that much about it. I looked at the Hogdan site and it shows nothing in the .308 nor did I see it listed for the .308 in my Hornady 7th ed.
Someone on the forum has used it so be patient,:)
Oh: welcome to the board. :D

The older IMR guide from 1997 showed:

150 Rem Pointed Core Lokt
46.0 grains IMR 4350 (compressed)
2415 fps
36600 CUP

As you can see, velocity is rather low as is the pressure using IMR4350, and I guess Hodgdon dropped it for this reason. Obviously it is very safe, and if you like what you see and it meets your need for a 30/30 spec load, try it. Any hope to even come close to full potential loads with IMR 4350 in 308 is not going to happen, but at least it will allow you to use what you have.

Good luck!

IMR 4350 is not a good 308 powder. 46 to 47 grains will just about fill the case. I remember loading some 190's with 47 grains of IMR 4350. I crunched that bullet down, and watched the bullet rise as the compressed powder pushed the bullet back!.

Velocities were still unimpressive.

The "standard" powder to use in a 308 is IMR 4895. Shoots great from 125's to 175's. Second powder is IMR 4064, shoots great from 125's to 190's. In the 4895 class is H4895, AA2495. Some are having great success with Varget. It shoots well in my bolt guns, my lot is too slow in my gas guns.

Save your IMR 4350 for the 30-06/270/7mm/6.5X55/375 H&H etc.

calldog, if you have an excess amount of the IMR4350, perhaps someone near would trade for powder that you could use. Just a thought.

Just a thought.....

I don't know what your intended purpose for the 150 grain loads in .308 might be, but could the same purpose be served with a slightly lighter bullet? Perhaps the use of a 125 or 130 grain projectile would allow enough room inside the case to add slightly more 4350, and come up with a dandy varmint load.

I would have to agree... IMR4350 would not be a powder I would use for 308 either. I really like IMR4895 for lighter bullets to 150gr. 168gr I would prefer IMR4064 or even Varget. My loads with 175 and 190 gr for 308 also get IMR4064.

Cheers...

748 or 3031 have both worked very well for me.... also love 165 spbt hornadys...

I would like to add that this is for Target shooting using Match kings. For hunting rounds, I might go another route powder wise although I have not hunted with a 308 for quite some time.

Cheers...
