after reading the links about guys that shot the lead bullets out of their glocks, I think i will avoid it and be safe.

Many reasons why I shoot lead bullets out of Lone Wolf barrels in my Glocks.

is it safe to fire lead bullets from a Rock Island 1911?

Rock Island has conventional land/groove rifling more compatible with lead bullets. You still need to clean and check for leading in the barrel.

Is there anywhere in Eastern Pa that I could pick up the supplies at a good price to avoind all the Hazmat charges and shipping?

Just buy in high enough quanties to justify the hazmet fee, may seem hard for someone just starting out but it'll pay off very shortly. Here's a thought, go in with some friends and make up a bulk order, sound good?

Perfectly OK. You might have to play around with your OAL so it feeds right, but other than that, no problem.
