Need help with c.o.l for 30.06 165 grain SST using I'm 4350....all results have been very conflicting

Hi. Use the SAAMI Max of 3.340" for any .30-06. Save you a lot of mucking around. The bullet type and powder don't matter. And OAL is measured from the pointy bit of the bullet to the flat of the case head. No ogives involved.

I disagree, COAL will be different depending on bullet characteristics. If you load a 125 balistic tip to 3.34 your not gonna have much shank inside the cartridge neck. If you try run a blunt 220 at 3.34 your could possibly be hitting the lands. If you want to just PICK a coal and go with that, chose what the bullet manufacturer recommends in their manual, if you dont have their manual, check Hodgdons site, and see if they have a listing for the bullet you want in their reloading database http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/rifle.

As to your specific load request I used 58grn of either imr4350 or h4350 (which ever i could get) behind the 165SSTs, when i was shooting them. My coal was specific to my rifle and was over 3.4", your will likely be different, but id suggest starting at 55grn of 4350 and a COAL of 3.25
Work up the powder charge carefully, and watch for pressure signs.

and welcome to THR

57g IMR4350 with the 165 SST seated to the center of the cannulure with the brass trimmed to 2.485”

That netted some pretty accurate groups in my rifle.

As always, don’t let random folks on the internet be the final authority on your load selection. Always verify with published load data. It’s easy for someone to fat finger an important detail or just not know what the hell they’re talking about.

Thanks,I will try that and see how it goes

If a 30-06 won't shoot 56-57 grains of IMR 4350 and a 165 grain bullet then it won't shoot anything. If the bullet has a cannelure seat it to that. If not just use the COAL listed by the bullets maker.
