Hey guys, quick question.

Using reloads as self defense rounds, I recently had a discussion on another forum about using some personal protection rounds I developed. An interesting legal question arose, whether should these be used in self defense, my legal position may be more compromised than using commercial ammo.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

use google to search for discussions here--i.e., at THR. It's been discussed a lot.

I would say the consensus is "A good shoot is a good shoot; no matter what ammo is used."

Ayoob, a learned writer and expert in S.D. has advocated for years to use ONLY factory ammo for carry where you may get into a shooting. His position is that a shyster may try to use the "Cop Killer" excuse against you in a court and if you use factory, that pretty nulifies that excuse. You may find some of his posts here by using search but I have read several of his articles and have to agree.

My 45acp mag is staggared with Win. STHP and CCI Blazer Jacketed ball as is my M22 Smith.

You use what you feel best with but me? I am gonna listen to the experts.

JMHO, but if 20 people post a response here, then your gonna get 20 different opinions.....:D

I would say it depends on what you load. I you are loading some stupid UBER round with a mercury tip you think you will have more stopping power I think they would make the case you were trying to make it more "deadly" and you are irresponsible and dangerous. I don't think it would be an issue if you were just using regular factory style bullets at factory level velocities.

Handloads create forensic ambiguities, without providing any advantages over commercial self-defense ammunition.

Handloaded EQUIVALENTS for PRACTICE are a great idea.
