Hello all, the wife and I are thinking of moving out of new york state next year, we are looking for something that is gun friendly, good hunting with public land, snow in the winter and a good chance of finding work. I'm a industrial mechanic and there wife is a nurse. Any recommendations?

Upper Midwest.....plenty of opportunities with Agriculure related equipment, manufacturing, etc. Shortage of Nurses, good whitetail hunting......stay away from Illinois, high tax and spend liberals will take your earnings, FOID gun restrictions another negative.

Lots of jobs here but not gun friendly.

You might have a hard time putting all that together in one place.

I would look at CO if I were you. It's turning blue just like the rest of west though.

FWIW, I'm seriously thinking of leaving NY myself, and following some friends who moved to Arkansas last year. Good hunting for lots of game on lots of land, but not a lot of snow. My friend pulls down good money as a mechanic at a Deere dealership; don't know about the nursing market, though, but there is a widespread shortage nationally. Cost of living is mercifully low--especially when compared to life here in the Empire state.

Best of luck wherever you go.

Oklahoma north to Canada. Oklahoma has everything you’re looking for except snow. It doesn’t snow every year. Kansas, Nebraska, the Dakotas, get snow pretty much every year. But they trade that snow for the awesome public land that Oklahoma has.

Yeah, I am thinking seriously, about moving out of Florida to Indiana to be nearer family.

I would think some of the midwest states, like Kansas and Indiana, and over to the east with Ohio and Kentucky, might have what you're looking for.

South Dakota would meet all of your criteria, but heavy industry opportunity is concentrated in the Southeast end of the state. There are many implement dealers that need mechanics, and we are growing a firearms industry in the Black Hills.

Stay out of Co. Not only has it been California, the DOW has chased a number of hunters to other states with it's confused, ad hoc lottery system. A number of guys I work with won't even draw tags here because the system is horrible. Traffic, because of population explosion has turned almost every major roadway into toll lanes, and yep, it's turning bad blue fast. Been here since 75 and looking elsewhere when I retire finally.

Check out jobs at Hill AFB on https://www.usajobs.gov/

Wisconsin is gun friendly, taxes are middle of the road, unemployment is very low, winter is snowy, pretty large pieces of public land in the north.

There are several cities in the 50,000 population range with lots of nursing jobs and also where a mechanic can find work.

There’s been a huge push in the last four years to draw talent from other states and that won’t be letting up unless we get a new governor.

Omaha is booming right now. My wife is a nurse and was getting some solid sign on bonuses when she was a new grad because of the shortage. I'd take a look at living across the river in Iowa and just crossing the bridge for work. Iowa has lower taxes (at least lower than Omaha metro), better gun culture (again compared to Omaha), you get more house for the dollar especially on the East side of Council Bluffs, and Iowa whitetail are a thing of envy around here. If you are more interested in mule deer then the Nebraska side would be a better idea. Another thing about Iowa is the state has actually been moving towards less restrictive guns laws, I feel this is really important because sometimes I get the feeling that California gun control it inevitable in all major cities when I read too much news.

Amarillo, Texas area. Population right at 200, 000 and growing.Very friendly 2A state. Snow in the wintertime but the wind sweeping off the plains can be bitter cold. Most of the public hunting land is dedicated to dove, quail, some pheasant, water fowl and feral pigs. Make a few friends, ask around and you can probably set up in a deer stand in no time.
Not sure about industrial mechanic jobs but the Feds have a couple of large plants in the area. I drive through there a couple of times a year and it's really growing. Several hospitals in the area, not far from the Rockies, New Mexico and Oklahoma, fairly low cost of living and no state income tax. Lot's of open spaces up there.

I am in NY and getting ready to leave myself. My wife is an IT Manager at a Large Hospital and I do high end Specialized Networking all over the country, and slowly the world, so moving is easier for me since I can travel from about anywhere. I was in Augusta GA last summer for work. I used some of my airline miles to fly the wife down for a weekend. We both liked the place. We were thinking we would live in North Augusta. Looking for some land to go along with a house. We are slowly divesting from NY. Houses (we own three) are going on the market in the spring. We already have the cash for the move. Already done some initial packing. We don't necessarily need the houses sold before the move takes place. For us, having snow isn't an issue. It might snow every now and then in GA. We also looked at the Tampa area in Florida, but its not quite what we like. Anyone need a good used snowblower?

What I would recommend is that you check out the area first if at all possible. Then look around the area at housing and of course work.

Ohio might suit you. I left NY years ago and went to Alabama. I do miss the snow most of the time.

You have lots of good alternatives!

I live in Utah, about 30 miles north of Salt Lake City...very near Hill AFB, previously mentioned. There is a lot to recommend this area. Unemployment is typically less than the national average, there is a lot of software development going in the Provo area, and the climate is reasonably mild. HAFB has somewhere around 30,000 people on base, and is an alternative you should check. But there are LOTS of other good opportunities here.

The state is extremely gun friendly. There is an abundance of public land, and better than average hunting. Did I mention the best snow on Earth? Lots of skiing here.

We did live about 50 miles south of Reno for several years. I liked it a lot. I could take my wife to a dinner show at Tahoe, we had plenty of space, and the weather was.... interesting. Every afternoon, the wind would come up. The so-called Washoe Zephyrs were enough to blow away anything not well anchored. One day, I was in our back yard, and put out my hand to balance myself while I took a rock out of my shoe. That was a lucky thing. All the siding on the downwind side of the house was loose and hanging by its toenails. I had to use cement (basically hot melt glue that melted from the friction of hammering) screw nails to keep it secured.

Again, there is plenty of public land, decent hunting, and abundant outdoor recreation. I quite liked it.

Most places, you roll down the top of the Cheerios bag to avoid having the cereal attract moisture. There, you do it so it doesn't dry out.

The other place we really enjoyed living was SW Michigan, in St. Joseph. If you like the Midwest (and there is a lot to like about it), that is the best I've seen. You're right on the shore of Lake Michigan, across the lake from Chicago. The climate is very much moderated by the lake. However, lake effect is exactly as hard to shovel as regular snow. On balance, the climate is quite nice. There isn't much public land, but it's a very enjoyable place.

Go a bit further north into West MI and you got it made. Miles of beaches in summer, all the snow you could ever want in winter, tons of public and private land open to hunting and about 1% unemployment. What's not to love?

I would say Nevada, however I moved here about 29 years ago as it was really gun friendly, that is, just recently, after the idiot in Las Vegas, opened up on a Country Western Concert. (I'm too old to move now). Elko is a pretty nice hunting area, and just about anywhere in the upstate, where the people are really friendly and conservative. They have elk, mule deer, chukar, quail, ducks and geese, if you situate yourself near a fly way. Not to mention varmints if you're into that, cougar, coyotes, bobtails etc. I'm sure there is work for a mechanic, and especially nurses up there.

I recently moved to AZ from CA and love it here. I think the northern part has snow in the winter. From your list of criteria I suggest taking a look at Indiana.
