Bought it!!!

Well, I walked back into the pawn shop today with 320$ in my pocket. They had 425$ on the tag so I wasn't sure what he would say. He said 315$ plus 5$ for background check. The gun is in pretty decent shape but I will be doing my best to clean it up. It has a vr skeet barrel with a mirror like bore.

Barrel code.

The gun has AKNL on the left side of the barrel. Serial number is 4139868. Any idea the date of manufacture? I tried looking it up but to no avail.

Congrats to all the 1148 owners!

I bought mine (12 ga Sportsman 48) in 1971, with six rounds through it, for $75. Granted, they were $99 at K-Mart back then. A friend of mine had just bought it and then had a heart attack, so he sold it to me.

I hunted with it for many years and I still have it. Still looks good and still works fine. Makes a good loaner for dove opener. In fact it got used by somebody just last September.

Are the barrels user replaceable on the 11-48? I have a 12 gauge "Slug Special" version that my Dad left me. It has rifle sights and the receiver's been drilled and tapped for a scope.

He bought it new. I doubt it has 50 rounds through it.

Ok, so I to the gun broke down and opened it up. I really could not believe how clean it was inside. Someone really took care of this gun. While the outside had a little grime on it it cleaned up with just CLP. When I took the stock off I saw it was stamped with 28, guessing from reading other posts this means it is a stock from a 28ga. Guess that's why it's in relatively good shape. I did find that the barrel and the receiver are original as they have matching serial numbers. Should the charging handle be silver colored or a darker blued color. Mine is darker but I think it would look good polished but I don't want to do something incorrect.

I have one of each on the charging handle. The original was chromed. I found out a replacement charging handle from an 1100 will fit. I now have a spare, but it is blued.

Another new 1148 12ga owner here. Also gun was kind of oiled on outside inside it was dusty and dry, so it seems like it was in a storage for loong time.

I had a question about friction ring. See on a picture - brass (or copper) layer started to flake off metal. Is that normal working condition or I should be looking for replacement?

Looks like some cleaning is in order. Good thing is that there is no broken parts so far.

I love these old guns. I have a model 11 made in November of 1927 and an 1148 made in the 80s? Both in 12 ga. The 1148 was nearly perfect except for the barrel. It had rust around the muzzle. It cut cut back a few inches and tapped for chokes. It is now my goto gun. The model 11 was worn completely out with lots of galling on the moving bits. They got removed and smoothed down and now she's slicker than snot.

I've got a 1960 dated model 48 Sportsman in 12 gauge. These recoil operated guns are a lot of fun. Took it out pheasant hunting last month and did pretty well with it. Can't wait for this snow to melt off and take it out to the trap range.
