Rem 700 bolt release stuck.

The bolt release button above the trigger occasionally doesn't reset once pushed. This allows the bolt to be released out of the assembly without repushing the button. I realize that it likely is dirty. How difficult is it to remove the barrel and action from the stock, clean and lube the bolt release mechanism and reassemble the barrel and action to the stock? Is there another explanation or way to clean the mechanism without removing the stock?

The two large screws that hold the the bottom metal around the trigger are called action screws. Remove them with a properly fitted screw driver. The action and attached barrel will then lift out of the stock. The bolt release is a thin bar on the left side on the bolt race. I suggest you not take it out but just hose it down with a spray cleaner like brake cleaner, gun scrubber, etc. LIGHTLY lube. Lube attacks dirt.

There is no good way to do it without removing the stock. Remove the stock and clean as advised above. This keeps oil and other solvents off the stock where it could discolor or damage the stock.

On my 700 besides the two large screws there is a smaller screw in the front of the trigger guard that also must be removed to release the stock.

I removed both trigger guard screws--both were allen heads. The trigger assembly, trigger guard and magazine came out as well. The release mechanism was stuck up with crud. I cleaned it out and relubed lightly. Everything went back in place nicely--not my usual experience--and the bolt release worked nicely.

That's pretty common; The grease Remington applied to them hardens over time. My .25-06 was nigh impossible to depress with fingers, and would not return without being pulled back down. Just removed the trigger group and cleaned it thoroughly, did not lube the bolt release afterward (doesn't need it).

I agree with markIV clean it real well with break clean or electrical cleaner and dont oil it. All oil does in the trigger mechinism is collect more crud.

Shooting it will also crud it up. Suggest adding a few drops of CLP or a light oil then spreading it around with compressed air and wiping off the excess. Takes a good while to build up again if you don't care to regularly remove the stock for cleaning.
