Brand new 700 SPS recently purchased. Had it out last night to clean the rifle up and to see how it shot. Noticed what appeared to be a gouge on the edge of the bolt when I started to clean it. Now after looking at the pic I took it looks to me like it is cracked. What do you think? About the 10 o'clock position.

I don't see it could have possibly been gouged like that, I think it is a crack. This would make me worry about the heat treat in the rest of the bolt head too. I would send it to Remington, even if they don't replace it they need to know about it.

Not sorry I'm rid of all my R700s! Hope its not a crack, but Remington should make it right with a call, if it is...

Looks to me like Remington is trying out a new manufacturing method. Doesn't appear to have any what I'll call "finish machining" on the bolt face. It's about the worst example of a bolt face I've ever seen for that matter. If it were mine I'd definitely send it back!

You'll have to send back anyway because they recalled 8 million 700 rifles. To check you can go on their website and type in your serial number. They pay for shipping, so you may be able to get all the problems addressed with one trip back.

I agree with Yo Mama. I looks like the bolt never made it through the complete manufacturing process. It is totally unacceptable.

I'd like to see it clean before saying either way. Upper 2 o'clock position on the lug looks like a filled fracture, but I'm sure it's just an illusion.
Try cleaning and reposting.

Looks like there might be a hairline crack just to the right of 12 o'clock as well and that bottom lug looks kind of rough. I'm not particularly happy with my 700 either. Can't get a scope to zero. Tried three scopes, two bases and two sets of rings and still shoots way to the right.

I'd check that bolt under a magnifying glass, and good, bright light. If it is cracked, there isn't a chance in Hades I would pull the trigger on that rifle before it were repaired.

Please follow-up with us and let us know what's happens.

Took it in to the dealer this morning and they were as surprised as I was. Under a bright light and magnifying glass there is certainly a crack.

Gave me the option of sending it back to Remington for me or swapping it out. I chose the latter option and walked out with a new 308. Can't argue with that kind of service from the dealer.

Not sure how that rifle made it out of Remington QC like that but it did. I wonder if it was damaged during the recall as this dealer pulled all Remingtons off the shelf and sent them back before they would sell them.

bugmania, try the Burris Signature rings with the offset insert kit as it will align the scope to your barrel.

That is one butt ugly bolt face... Is this the kind of product we can expect from Remington now? That is finish machined??? Anyone else have examples of the "new" Remington quality control?

Great gun shop there by the way!!!

OP:

Glad it worked out. Even more glad for you that the whole bolt didn't just give-way. My father worked tool and die years ago. He has some stories of various metals giving way when proper hardness (for some reason) didn't take.

Good an on you too for having an awesome dealer. It's good for Remington to get that part back to their location, so they can assess what happened, and watch for other such failures in other firearms.

All in all, a good outcome!

I agree, it looks like a fracture. What does the chamber and contact surface of the lugs look like?

I've been seeing some really ugly work lately coming from Rem.. That one is mildly rough compared to some I've been seeing.
