Looking for a Rem 700 in 308 just for plinking at the range any maybe some competitions in the future. 200-600 yards , nothing further. Looking for something that is usable as a stock rifle but has an upgrade path for the future. A new trigger, detachable box magazine and an aftermarket stock with a bipod would be on the list of things I would want to do after I get some good glass for it.

This is coming from a person who knows nothing about the specific Rem 700 models. Would I regret buying the 700 SPS? Is the police version really worth $400 more than the SPS for what I want to do?

P.S. I'll need a left hand model so that might limit my choices, but if I ever do compete with it, I think I'll need to be able to work the bolt without breaking position.

The P will get you a stock that will not flex when shot from a bipod. It is my understanding the P rifles are built with higher QC than the standard 700's. I've had 2 (308 and 300wm) and both were good rifles.

I don't have any exp with Tikka rifles, but I would take a hard look at them if I were in the market.

Some suggestions:

I have a Remington 700 Sendero in .308, which was so heavy (26" barrel, heavy composite stock) that I had the barrel cut to 20". That, for whatever reason, made the rifle noticeably more accurate and also easier to handle. Other people would likely choose to keep the long barrel.

My most recent Remington 700 is a 700 ACC-SD, and that's what I think I'd recommend. Heavy contour matte finish 20" barrel, already threaded for a suppressor, a bit on the heavy side but a good (and adjustable) trigger, an unusual but appealing stock material and mine has been a good shooter.

I've got a 700 VSSF (Varmint Synthetic Stainless Fluted) in 308, liked it so well I bought one in 223 as well ... They are not only accurate but good looking, versatile and have a ton of aftermarket support ... however as noted above, the 26" barrel does add some heft to it.

They come in a HS Precision stock but I have a pillar bedded Choate stock for it as well because it's a little shorter lop ... This is an old picture, I've since removed the muzzle break in favor of a QD suppressor mount

Anyway, good luck with your project!

I bought a SPS in 300 win and had the action eventually trued and had Krieger put a barrel on it. It was a shooter before and now is just as much a nail driver. The SPS makes for a good starter rifle and still good enough to upgrade in the future. The GS work just put my mind at ease knowing any issues would be my own fault and not the rifle. have ~420 rds thru it since the truing and new barrel and it holds its own out to 1k.

Think about one of the AAC models or the one with a 20" barrel with that hogue rubber stock. Good starter platforms for future custom jobs- I've heard some good stuff about the magpul stocks and detachable mag setups but never used one. The AAC model will be threaded if you want to go with a brake or even a suppressor at a later time.

I spent the extra and got the Milspec. The H&S Stock although nice was replaced by a KRG Xray. Timney Trigger and Viper Vortex tops it off with a DNZ Tactical 20 MOA Mount. The tactical looks like the non tactical but has four screws per ring.
