I have a Remington 722 in 308 that developed a problem yesterday; about half the time it won’t stay cocked. When opening the bolt it cocks normally but upon closing it uncocks itself. I field stripped the bolt and it looks normal. Haven’t pulled the action out of the wood yet but what will I look for when I do? Is this an automatic trip to the gunsmith? TIA

That is an old gun, and Remington sears and trigger parts do wear out. Yes, I think the job would be better left to a gunsmith or Remington. For some parts, using the screw adjustments can compensate for wear. But something like a worn sear should be replaced, not tinkered with.
