Question for the guys/gals in Massachusetts..
What do the confusing MA laws say about adding a mag extension to a shotgun, besides requiring an LTC?
Is it a legal modification?

From a dealers perspective the gun had to come from the factory that way. MA has it's on AWB and if you increased the capacity of your shotgun, you may be in violation of the MA AWB.

I believe SOT_II is correct in this. I bought a Mossberg 500A that already had the mag extension on it and it was perfectly legal. But to add it after the fact to an 870 would involve modifications (dremeling down a nub in the feeding tube) for it to work properly.

I expect you are probably correct.
Well, nothing wrong with 4+1, in the standard Deer gun.
(maybe look for a used Mossberg next yr.)

FYI, MA and Shotguns

As far as I can see in Mass Gun Law, Chapter 140 Section 121...

An AW is a semi-automatic.
"the term assault weapon shall not include: (i) any of the weapons, or replicas or duplicates of such weapons, specified in appendix A to 18 U.S.C. section 922, as such weapons were manufactured on October 1, 1993; (ii) any weapon that is operated by manual bolt, pump, lever or slide action"

So, the term AW is Not applicable to a Pump shotgun.

This term Large Capacity Feeding Device does apply, so an LTC is needed.

"Large capacity feeding device'', (i) a fixed or detachable magazine, box, drum, feed strip or similar device capable of accepting, or that can be readily converted to accept, more than ten rounds of ammunition or more than five shotgun shells"

The term Large capacity Weapon does Not apply to pump shotguns...

"The term "large capacity weapon'' shall be a secondary designation and shall apply to a weapon in addition to its primary designation as a firearm, rifle or shotgun and shall not include: (i) any weapon that was manufactured in or prior to the year 1899; (ii) any weapon that operates by manual bolt, pump, lever or slide action"

(the above is taken right from the laws; I am no lawyer: interpret it as you see fit)

Hummm, looks like you are correct in this. I was thinking more along the lines in that you had to modify it by dremeling off the nub inside the feeding tube in order for it to work properly.

Learn something new every day. I would of sworn it's illegal as I've never seen them being sold locally or at a Mass gun show.

It may be mentioned in some other obscure section, so I'm not convinced it's legal or illegal yet.
I'll drop GOAL an email, and see if they know.

You did the right thing going to the law, and you got the right answer.

You're right, however, that there's always the risk of some obscure provision buried somewhere else, but in this case I don't think there is anything else out there...you should be fine.
