Im looking for a moderately priced shotgun with an 18" barrel, My first choice was a remington 870 police magnum, but the shop I always use had trouble getting one then they wanted to jack up the price. So I was back to looking at mossberg. I was going to get a 590 but I noticed in another forum that there was the 590 and 590a1. Does anyone know whats different between the 2 also does anyone have any pictures of the 2 side by side?

590-all blued, standard bead sight
590A1-parkerized, ghost ring sights

Both have full-length tube magazines and heat shields.

Supposedly, the mil-spec version is the 590A1. I don't have pics of either...

Try calling Mossberg at:
O.F. Mossberg & Sons, Inc.
7 Grasso Ave.
North Haven, CT 06473
Telephone: (203) 230-5300 (8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. E.S.T.)
Fax: (203) 230-5420

Here's what I know/recall:
The 590 series (without the "A1") generally has a plastic trigger-guard and safety switch. The 590 did have a blued version in 20". The other versions were Parkerized. There is even a "Mariner" version or two.

The 20", 9-shot (8+1) Parkerized versions are available with either a bead-sight with heat-shield; or a ghost-ring-sight version without heatshield.

I don't recall there were any 18.5" 590 versions.

The 590A1 does/did come in 18.5", 6-round (5+1), Parkerized versions with either a bead-sight or ghost-ring-sights. There used to be separate stock numbers if a Speedfeed stock was desired, which held 4 additional shells in the stock. There were also 14" models in Mossberg's line-up. 590A1's have metal trigger-guards and safety switches. There were also 20" Parkerized versions and would look the same as the 590 series, above, but would have the metal trigger-guards and safeties. The stock numbers have/had the format 51xxx.

Mossberg's website recently was changed/updated. I'm unable to find any links to the 590A1 series and Mossberg has yet to email me to let me know if there even is a link/website.

So, if you wanted an 18.5" barrel, did you want a bead-sight or ghost-ring-sight? Did you want the Speedfeed I stock, or the regular straight Mossberg stock? Contact Mossberg, get the stock number, and order one. It's a great shotgun!

(Wow, this reply was exhausting and I don't even get a cut of Mossberg's profits.)

Anyone else tired of answering the question?

And I really love the senior members who "think" they know the diff without checking the details.

(or maybe i read way way way too many archived 590a1 threads before i got mine)

ONLY the A1 has the following

- metal safety
- metal trigger guard
- heavy wall bbl

Well, after repeated reliablity problems with my 870, I think I'm going to give a 590A1 a shot... hopefully see what the going rate for one around here is soon. I think the catalog number I would be interested in is 51663-1.

southernwarrior187, in my reading i come to understand that just the navy 590 had the heavy barrel, is that my mis understanding?

Only the 590A1 has a heavy bbl. A standard 590 does not.

Easiest way to tell the difference -

Look at the left side of the receiver. It will have "590A1" in big print.

i understand only the 590a1s have the heavy barrel, but i believe i read that ones made for the navy had heavier than normal barrels, wether that means heavier than a 590, or heavier than a 590a1 is essentialy my question. i suppose i didnt word it right

Does that mean your unreliable 870 is up for sale?

june 2003 edition of american rifleman, "U.S. military small arms today" page 77. and i quote
"barrels of the Navy M590A1 are thicker than the others as the Navy thought the thinner barrels could not stand up to rough handling in the tight quarters of a ship"

wich, although i admit my first question was poorly worded, this answers my second, revised post.
( just for referance that question was )
"but i believe i read that ones made for the navy had heavier than normal barrels, wether that means heavier than a 590, or heavier than a 590a1 is essentialy my question"

you shouldnt dismiss a question so quickly.

Folks,
Let us remain civil please.

Mossberg? Didn't see any growing up. Then again I was brought up with Knowing how to shoot more important what you shot. Now-a-days folks say Hardware trumps Software.

Do a search under dfarriswheel here in shotgun forum for all sorts of data whom uses what and why. Mr. D is a respected member, with qualifications, and cites to back him up. He is not selling magazine subscritions either.

Gun fit to shooter for task, training, pattern board, practice what training taught you. Dave puts it BA/UU/R.

Can YOU reach all the controls on ____ shotgun? Does the LOP, drop, cast on - cast off, pitch ...fit YOU?

If you want to know what Team Walrus uses - I am the only person that knows. :) I invented Team Walrus for some things I wrote to pay respects to known trainers - and to poke fun at "inner-net" wannabes and blowhards.

Real Deal? Took out a rabid raccoon the other evening, mean critter and was coming at us full bore. Concerns of "in fear of family pet and children".
I used a shotgun, just like the one I use / keep handy for HD.
NEF Youth 20 ga single shot - load was Rem slug - complete with the speckled rust on base of shell.

Shot, hit, thumbed opened, spent hull out, inserted another that was in weak fingers - shot again and reloaded. Ruark said to shoot twice - so I do.

Think Tueller drill, with a racoon coming out of brush...

Had a lady backing me up, she uses a 1300 in 20 - it fits her. She has run 100 buckshot in a day, and 100 slugs in a day. I know she has shot 10 rds of skeet in one day...she can shoot, she shoots that gun very well. 5'2" on her tippy toes, and petite. She can handle the large counts of heavy loads, and round counts - she has the correct basics down pat.

If a Mossbery fits you fine. If you are left handed and the safety works for you - fine. They do not for me, because of the way of I was taught to shoot a shotgun, and where my thumb is...same side of reciever as trigger finger.

Shoot a short LOP and figure it out.

I/we suggest to set up the house guns for the smallest person in the house. A big person can shoot a smaller gun - a small person cannot shoot a bigger gun.
Be it weight [ext mag, sidesaddle], guage, LOP...

Art and Science
...Brister said it best.

I want a Cookie too lol
as well as the 590A1 having the Heavy walled barrel as it is called, has anyone seen a 500M.
I own one and it is the pump version 500M metal trigger housing safety, parked with Heavy wall Barrel.
When I purchased in 2000 called Mossberg and they had no knowledge as it came wit 24" barrel The nice lady said send that one in and we;ll send you a 20" for a replacement. Told her no thanks and bought the 20" heavy wall parked barrel, must call them back and see what they say now as they were not supposed to be sold to civvies.
