Remage barrels?

Anyone here have much experience with the "Remage" barrels that are out there?

I recently picked up a little Remington model Seven .308 with a threaded 16.5" barrel. Cool little gun, but there will be occasions where I want a little more speed than that short barrel can offer, so I'm considering buying a Remage pre-fit for it.

I have quite a bit of experience now swapping barrels on Savage rifles, so the idea is appealing to me and I already have all the tools/equipment I'd need.

Thanks in advance!

My Rem700 is sporting a new stainless, Palma-contour, 1:8, .224, .223 AI barrel from Northland.

It's showing promise; I've learned it likes a bit of jump, and to date the best 5x group it's turned in is ~0.35MOA with Hornady's 75gt HPBT.

And that AI brass just looks cool.

Never heard of Remage, but that doesn't mean anything, but there is a fellow THR guy that posted really good results using a drop in Shillen barrel on his Savage. I'm normally a Krieger guy and would never have even considered a Shillen, but results don't lie. And they are priced right.

I used a blank Douglas barrel for a 450 BM Remage build. Threaded it myself.

McGowan makes Remage pre fit barrels. Im sure tons of others do too.

The remage systems are pretty popular....I THINK @Legionnaire has done a couple.

I really dislike nutted barrels unless the nuts are pretty well blended, so even on a Savage I'm likely to go with a shouldered barrel (if I'm ordering one).

That said they offer all the same advantages to the Remington 700 that they offer to the savage 110 line. Primarily that you can quickly swap your barrel yourself with minimal tooling. I've also never heard of one shooting badly, and there's enough out there if it was a common issue it woulda come up by now.

Yes, I've built three to date: a .243 AI built on a Model 7, and a .22-250 AI and a .260 AI both built on Remington 700s. All three sport McGowen barrels, and while I'm still tinkering with loads, they shoot very well. I'll agree that they don't look as elegant as a traditional shouldered barrel, but I don't mind the way they look at all. Here are pics of the .22-250 AI and the .260 AI builds.

Thanks Legionnaire. Nice looking rifles. I'm thinking of going this direction with a model 7 I just picked up.

What is the contour of those McGowan barrels?

@Newtosavage, here is McGowen's contour chart.
The .22-250 AI is a 24-inch 8-twist McGowen #4.
The .260 AI is a 26-inch 8.5-twist McGowen #6

I have a 20-inch McGowen #2 on my Model 7 .243 AI. Were I to do that one again, I'd do a 22-inch #1. The Model 7 would do well with a lighter barrel.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but where did you come up with the M7 action??

The only ones I can find for sale are the trued Pacified Tool and Gauge. I'm really interested in putting together a light hunter in .260AI this year.

Found a good deal on a used Model 7 in .243 with a synthetic youth stock as a donor. Had my smith pull the barrel and square the face of the action, bolt, and lugs.

A fast-twist .260 AI would be outstanding in a Model 7. I'd build one myself but for the fact that I found one already built on a 700 Ti.

THANKS!

I was afraid you were going to say "donor rifle", finding one cheap is going to be one of those Holy Grail type searches!

I think I paid $450 for the donor. After selling the stock, I was into the action for under $400. Smith charged me less than $100 to pull the barrel and do the minimal truing.

I always have my eye open for inexpensive Model 7s.

@Chuck R., a birch-stocked Model 7 in .243 just sold on GB for $380. I bid on it, but wasn't motivated enough to go higher. They're out there if you watch for them.

ARRRRRGH!

$380 would have been worth it!

I have a saved search and daily emails for REM M7s on Gunbroker! Unfortunately right now both my .civ Email and the Gunbroker website are blocked at work, and I let that one one slip through. Most I've watched have gone into the stupid levels of worth just buying new.

It's what I deserve for becoming complacent.....:(
