I have always wanted a shooter Colt WWII era 1911 but don't have the $$$$. I just saw in the local paper ads that Sportsmans Whse. is running a sale on the plain jane Remington 1911 for $399. I know nothing about the Remington. For a truck gun/shooter is this a decent 1911 at that price? Pros Cons???

Remington has a $100 rebate going right now as well.

My plain jane R1 was a great shooter and well built.

If I was looking for a Gi-type 1911, that'd be my first choice. I've shot a couple of them, and for that price, you won't be sorry. My best friend thought his trigger was a bit gritty, and replaced the stock one, but I think the cleaning he did while apart fixed it as much as the new part.

At Sportsmans Warehouse, the $399 price factors in the $100 rebate, so it's $499 out the door and a long wait for your rebate check. That said, I'm tempted. I've read a bunch of reviews. There were apparently some issues when the R1 was first introduced, but recent production seems to have resolved most of those. Apparently some early problems were magazine induced. The Stainless is $449 after the rebate.

That's a great deal. I paid $600 for mine a few years ago. I already had a Colt Mk IV stainless and a Kimber Stainless Target II 10mm, so I went for the no frills GI style. It's solid, reliable, plenty accurate for what it is, good fit & finish. All-in-all, a very nice pistol. At $399 after rebate, it's a no-brainer if you're in the market. That's a quality American made gun for less than the price of the Philipino stuff.

The Remington 1911 R1 is a handsome, nice shooting (duh - it IS a 1911), dependable pistol. I had one and liked it, but ended up selling the R1 and buying a Colt #O1991 that I like better in every way save one - the shiny black Remington finish was prettier than the matte black Colt. For about a hundred dollars more, I would choose the Colt every time, BUT, at a price of $499 minus a $100 rebate the Remington is truly a good deal on its own merits.

Note for the uninitiated - photos not to the same scale ...

Well, if you wanted a lanyard loop (to really look GI) the Auto Ordinance is only $50 more.

This price point also neatly embraces the RIA models that are GI-like. (Note, you might have to order one, as nobody seems to stock GI-look.)

I shoot a game called Wild Bunch Action Shooting. The R1 is pretty popular because its sights are legal for the Traditional category but are more useful than GI type sights.

The R1 has a Series 80-style firing pin block. Some folks like that, some prefer a Series 70 such as the Ruger SR1911.

Hi Steve,

I think you'd do fine with a Remington R1. I've seen them much and shot them a few times. They are solid and true to the principles of a 1911. You could do a lot worse.

I jumped on the $100 cash rebate earlier this year to lower the GrabaGun $499 price to $399. Good gun a a great value. OP should go for one before this rebate expires. When the $100 rebate check arrive a couple of months later, you've got the price of a good holster or a few boxes of ammo. :)

I've had a R1 since 2011. It has always loaded and fired as it should. Mine prefers Remington mags, other brands feed OK but don't eject easily when empty. Also the trigger, while improving, is creepy during take-up due to the Series 80 safety system. I like the sights and the finish.

This. If you want an inexpensive WW2-style .45, the RIA (Philippine-made) and the Auto Ordnance (Kahr Arms) are contenders. The Auto Ordnance is actually the closest to the WW2 appearance, except that it has the Series-80 style firing pin safety. You can remove that and substitute a GI firing pin, if you use a special spacer in the frame.

The problem that I have with the Remington (and other modern clones) is that the sights are too tall for authenticity. But then I'm looking at it from the point of view of a collector and historian, and not a shooter.

Back in 2011 I went out looking for a decent 1911 primarily for use as a range gun. Nothing super fancy, tricked out, or high end target grade; just your basic fixed sight 1911. Went to a gun shop where they had every 1911 imaginable there and started out looking at the Remington R1. The shop owner, who also builds custom1911s, said it was a decent buy but that he felt the current production of Colt 1911s were some of the best guns he had seen by Colt in many years. He compared the two guns side by side and feature for feature the Colt was the better built of the two guns. Bottom line: I went with the Colt Government. Nothing wrong with the Remington R1, just that the Colt, while a bit more money, was the right choice for me.

The "100 Years of Service" inscription on the slide was just icing on the cake for me!

If money were no object, one could wait for the CMP 1911s to be available sometime in 2018. I'm guessing the price will be north of $1200.

Bannockburn --> That's one solid 1911 you have there. I have also heard about and seen the quality of the recent Colts. They are just fine, and as I remember findable in the $750 range.

I did the rebate this past summer on the R1 Enhanced Stainless Commander. It took about six weeks for the check to come. I didn't find that unreasonable at all.

LoL
I'm half thinking they will have Field Grades that are $400, but will sell for $800 from having brand new barrels, slides & bushings :)
I wonder if they will use stainless or blued replacement parts? :)
Hmm, replaced sears will be all sweet from being stoned to perfection, but, it will be offset by having a brand new three-finger spring.
