I'm asking cuz I don't know  How can the 552 handle 22 rimfire short, longs and long rifles all from the same semi-auto action? It seems like no other manufacturer wants to try it. Why? :scrutiny:

Mike

the 552 has a lightweight bolt that impacts a buffer when more powerful ammo is used. It seems to work well.

I don't know why others have not done something similar.

Perhaps, other manufacturers don't believe there is much of a market.

The forerunner, the 550, was the same--which is why I bought one when I was a kid. Shorts were about 30¢ a box, compared to the far more expensive 47¢ for long rifle hollow-points.

Good question, and correct answer - I wish other makers would do this, too. The speedmaster is cool - only one I know of that reliably cycles shorts and subsonics.

Ah, the good ol' days. rofl! I remember getting a whoopin' 'cause every time mom would send me down to the little country store down the road on my bicycle for milk or something, I'd put a 50 cent box of long rifles on the bill. I probably bought one a week that way, figured it was my pedal fee, didn't bother telling mom, though. Couldn't sit down for a week. LOL! Maybe I shoulda bought shorts. I was shooting 'em out of a 512X bolt gun. We never lacked for squirrel meat and mom's squirrel dumplings were fantastic. I don't know how I was supposed to fill the freezer without ammo. LOL

I picked up an old Savage Model 52B in 85% condition that has proven to be reliable to shoot 22 short, long and long rifle. Most people I have talked to said they were unreliable junk. But for 30 bucks, it has done well for me and there are plenty floating around gun shows and on the web.

552 better shoot shorts......

I own a zillion guns, only 1 Remington (until tomorrow) is a 22 SS model 33. I'm retired, I live in the country, I sit on the deck and target shoot and crows and general pests. 99.998% of the time it's targets nailed to a stump. I don't know why but I only own 1 very old Remington model 33 single shot. Last night after reading a lot recently about the Remington 552 BDL and it shooting and feeding 22 short, long and LR, well I decided I had to have one, mine arrives tomorrow. I shoot a lot of shorts to keep the noise in the neighborhood down. Even tho I live in the country I do have some neighbors within ear shot... So, I was just passing through and got to reading what you other guys got to say about the Remington 552. I hope everything I've read in mostly right on target I'm looking to spend my last few years sitting on the deck drinking iced tea doing my thing with this Remington 552 BDL. Loading the old single shot got to hard with my hands and arthirtis. I hope you boys telling truth about how the 552 works because of the bolt and buffer thing, that makes sense, Ruger needs to try that.
Tell me flat out what you think. I can't change my mind now but I still care what you guys got to say. After about wednesday next week I'll be back and throw in my 2 cents worth after I've tried every type of 22 shell in the house. Starting with CCI 22 short hallow points.

BTW MCgunner......

My granny set my britches afar many times for the same thing. Only difference between us I remember a box of cartridges costin .27 cents and I drove the tractor to the store instead of bicycle, to many hills. Granny expected 1 squirrel or 1 something for the shells. I didn't get to target shoot much until after I had met my quota for the box of shells so I mostly learned to hit what I aimed at so I'd have extra for just shootin......
I'm guessin Granny is about to have a stroke a sittin up in heaven watchin me waste ammo off the deck but if she sees how happy I am I'm sure she'll forgive me......

Rangerruck,
The 550 does indeed have a floating chamber. The 552 does not. It's a common misconception. I own two 552s. There was a discussion over on RFC about the same subject. I emailed Remington and they confirmed that the 552 is sans floating chamber.

My uncle gave me his old 552 (probably a 1960 model...maybe older, I need to find out)...excellent condition.

I shot MANY coons, squirrels, and crows out of trees with this rifle as a boy...and like the others...got my share of whoopin's for finding ways to get ammo.

Last week I asked about whether refinishing a Savage 6DL-N R would be considered Bubba-ing. I noted that rifle will shoot s,l,lr interchangably and inter mixed and sometimes cycle crimped LR shot.

WHen the folks got it for me I was terribly disappointed be casue it was not a Nylon 66. Dad had a Nylon and I thought it was the neatest most futuristic looking rifle around and asked for one.

Instead I got the Savage 6DL-N R on Christmas morning along with my other "big" gift, a Polaroid "Swinger" camera.

After my initial grumpiness wore off I started to see the benifit of a .22 Semi auto that could shoot what was available and what was cheap. Another thing was the ability to use it as a repeater rather than semi auto. This has come in handy with CB Longs and plastic domed shotshells fed from the magazine and fired with the bolt locked.

When I was a boy I assumed the rifle "shot harder" and was more accurate in the repeater mode rather than semi auto.

Oh and of no importance or having nothing to do with this thread, the Hummingbirds have just found the new feeder hung up out side and viewed just to the right of my monitor. Hmmm Humingbirds....I must try some Aquila in the Savage. There, back on topic.

My 552 is my favorite .22 rifle. It's accurate, it's handy, and it eats anything.

Remington 552 BDL

I picked mine up about 3:00 and was still shooting at dusk. That thing actually does shoot anything you put in it. I mixed short, LR, even shot shells, mixed...... everything cycled and ejected very nicely. After proving the dang thing would indeed shoot anything I put in it I got down to some serious target shooting. It's only my opinion but why have such a nice gun and such horrible sights, especially the rear. My old model 33 has better sights. After I seen groups were "very nice" I put a BSA Red dot on it, worked REAL NICE up close with shorts. Then I sit down and put a Leupold 3x9x50. I used CCI short HP's and Wolf Match Target 22 LR. I can see this is a very fine firearm and I'm a proud owner. I never planned to shoot open sights anyway so I took the rear sight off, it was in the way of the 50mm Leupold. Didn't get it sighted in but I had holes in holes, 5 shots 3 holes... The thing I had to know if they puppy would indeed cycle anything, any combination (why I would want to mix ammo I have "no clue" but Remington said it would so I had to see it and it does indeed do everything they said it would. Highly recommend this Remington 552 BDL Deluxe Speedmaster as long as you plan to use some sort of optics, iron sight are poor. Well maybe it's just my eye sight that is very poor and the sight are good as the gun.:uhoh: This is just my thoughts.......... I'll give this puppy a extremely high rating, nice tight groups with all ammo I had..... of course I use good ammo tho, not any cheap stuff I can find. Mostly Wolf and Remington. Lots of people don't like Wolf Match Target but I do...
Good luck and if you got one or plan to have one let me know what you think and any tips and tricks that might come in handy.
The name is Scotter, call me Rusty Trigger...........

you know what else these will do? they will shoot the Aguila sniper subsonic sss rounds, 60 grainers. Most 22's cannot stabilize these, because of their massive weight, but this baby will.

I have shot those in my 572 pump too, with good results.

IMO, the reason that we see so few late production .22 RFs other than BAs that are made to function with all the common .22 RF cartridges is mainly what Art mentioned.

He and I are likely of the same generation. Ammo cost was a large factor when we were kids, as cash of our own was both limited and hard to come by. This wasn't limited to just the length of the rounds. There was also a not-inconsiderable difference between solids and HPs and SV vs. HS in all the catagories.

In those days all of the major manufacturers directed a large portion of their marketing for their .22 rifles at youngsters (Remember drooling over those ads in "Boy's Life" and the comic books, Art?) and folks who used a RF rifles as a utilitarian working tool and took this into consideration.

Having a rifle that could use whatever you could manage to get was a HUGE plus, as it could literally make the difference between 'can' and 'can't' when an afternoon's shooting or a hunt was proposed.

For a good many years now the HSLR has been the least expensive and most common .22 RF cartridge, so even a lot of retro reproductions like the later Rossi/Taurus M62's are stamped ".22 LR Only".

In the semiauto market back then the "Deluxe" Remington 552 was the Cadillac of the market and literally the stuff of dreams to many of us. Ditto the Marlin 39 in LAs and the Winchester and Remmie pumpers.

Get one! They're still wonderful rifles and while the ammo versatility may not matter as much in practical terms now it's still a Very Neat Thing to have in this geezer's opinion.

Reading my mind........

You guys are readin my mind. Rangerruck (?) that was the next 22 round I intended to try.... I need to find some first. I can't get anything local, everything has to be ordered. Altho firearm and shooting interest in my area is very high only basic stuff is available. "God, Guns and Guts let's keep all three" except I still have to order my shooting supplies off the internet...
Thanks and keep the tips and tricks and general comments coming, I'm reading and taking notes on them all.
Thank men,
Scotter but you can call me Rusty Trigger :D

Here's my latest one, just picked it up last week. It's more accurate than my old one, as good as my bolt actions. Forgive the rotten pics. They were taken in haste at the range. The guns are fouled with powder residue after several hundred rounds fired.

Here's the old one, now with a receiver sight of unknown origin. Though not quite as accurate as the new one, it will still put a full magazine into a nickle sized group at 50 yards.

Rear Sight

Tell me about that rear sight (peep on dovetail) I never seen one before. How do you like it ? If yes, where can I get one? If you note my only complaint :cuss: is is the rear sight. That would make it just about perfect I think :).
Thanks

Ditto Peep Sight, and a Caution

Yes, please! Where is that peep site designed for the tip-off grooves from! I gotta have that!

The 552 Speedmaster is a long neglected classic---I am thrilled to see it discussed here.

Now, I probably should not mention this here, but some of you badboys are bound to look at the innards of the 552, and decide that the secondary sear could be easily bypassed without even modifying the gun! Yes, full auto. DO NOT DO IT! It has been tried before, by many no doubt, but it cannot work as the flying bolt is just too light and fast. You will hear one bang, but find three smashed brass hulls embedded in the receiver---IF you are lucky and don't blow it up. It can feed faster than it can extract. Um, I only heard about this on the "street". DO NOT DO IT!

And who needs full auto when you can wiggle your finger just as fast on a good semi-auto, like the 552?.................................elsullo

Only problem I've had with the 552 was the paint on the ejection port side of the reciever came off and it is one ugly motha now. Shoots great and has never hung up a round.

That ejection port cover / director is rusting on mine and I've only had it a month. I'll fix this permanently soon.

As far as the peep sights I'm looking. I must have one. If I find them I'll post it here.
