I have a Remington 597 and I will be buying online ammo soon but was wondering what you guy's would chose. Im looking at Remington thunderbolt, blazer, or 550 bulk federal. Also any bad opinions on the keepshooting 597 magazine.

I have shot all kinds of .22 through my 597. Have the common non fires with the bulk Remington, but that isn't gun specific. I have always had a certain percentage of the bulk Remington that failed to fire on the first shot.

Have had my 597 for about 10 years and I love it.

I picked up a few cases of the Centurion (Aguila) 40gr some time ago and my 597 loves it.

If you have any feeding issues and are using the initially issued plastic mags, get one or two of the revised aluminum ones. You can still use the plastic ones. just load them one or two rounds short to make them happy.

Also, if you tear it down completely, be sure to not fully tighten the nuts on the rear of the guide rods upon reassembly. Snug them down and back then off a half turn. The receiver body will keep them from backing off, so no worries. If they are tight, they cause drag on the bolt body freely moving.

I've not yet tried any aftermarket mags, although I've been tempted once or twice on the clear 25 rounders.

I've shot 36 gr and 40 gr ammo and my 597 seems to shoot heavier bullets better. The 36 gr shoots up to 1 1/2" at 50 yards and 40 grain ammo shoot 1/2" groups at 50.
I use the 36 gr for hunting because it's hp and accurate enough for hunting. If I could find some 40 grain hp I'd like to see how it shoots in my gun.

I had extraction issues with mine.

End end up buying the volquartsen extractor and it fixed the issue. I also bought their hammer as well.

I have also used the Eagle 30 rounders without issue. I bout 1 remington clear 30 rounder and it sucks. I have all sorts of issues with that one. Here is a link for the eagle ones:

And lastly, here is mine in a Boyds stock. It will shoot any ammo good but I like the cheap remington golden bullet best. Here is the first woodchuck of the year at 80 yards.

The only problem I've had with mine were the magazines. They're a decent design, but the materials aren't up to snuff.
I can load 7rds and they function fine. Load 8 or more and they fail to feed.

With any "good" ammo, mine will shoot 1/2" at 50yds. CCI Minimags are consistently good. I also like the Winchester 555 bulk pack.
Some of the bulk pack 40gr solids like the Remington Thunderbolt will give some "duds", but is lot# specific.

I put a deeply discounted Boyds stock on mine and did a trigger job to get trigger to ~2lbs. I later glass bedded the stock.
It's a joy to shoot. But, nothing was really wrong with the original "plastic" stock. I did sand it to open it to make the "gap" even. It made "me" feel better, but rifle didn't shoot any better. It shot good to begin with.

CCI Blazer is my go-to for bulk ammo. Consistent, reliable and at least as accurate as anything else for a similar price.
Remington .22 ammo is on the avoid list aside from their subsonic or target stuff.
Federal bulk is ok. At least it fires reliably and is reasonably consistent (unlike Remington) but the lighter 36gr bullet is more likely to result in malfunctions when guns get dirty or in cold weather while the 40gr Blazers are better at keeping things cycling.

The Keepshooting mag is no different from the Remington "circle 10" mag. Except that KS uses a ridiculously heavy metal for the mag body. Aside from the weight, I'm pretty sure the parts are totally interchangeable. In my rifles, both function perfectly. First couple of times, it is a pain getting ten rounds in but that sorts out with a bit of use.
