I've heard .22 magnum is a good round, very accurate.

would the Remington semi-auto 597 be an accurate choice?

how about magnum research or if I can find one, a Ruger semi-auto in .22 mag? or the CZ semi-auto

No first hand experience, but I've read good reviews of the heavy barrel version.

I have a Remington 597 in 22 mag. It seems to be as accurate as my other rifles; in other words it is as accurate as the operator. They are a bit finicky about the magazine, I had to get a replacement for the one that came with the rifle but it works just fine as does the second Remington mag I purchased.

The 597 I had was accurate, though as has been said, the occasional mag problem pops up. Never had a MR, but I've had two Ruger 10/22Ms. One was accurate and one was reliable. They all left to make room for a CZ611 (NOT the 611A). With Winchester Supreme it's as accurate as a buddy's Anschutz bolt gun, which is really a shooter.

I've shot a Browning T-Bolt that was really accurate and with practice, quick to shoot.

Good luck with your quest.

I've got a standard wt. bbl Rem597 .22wmr.

It's accurate. But, I installed a Boyds laminated stock ($20 in 2003), glass bedded it and free-floated the bbl, and stoned the trigger to ~2lbs.

I've got two magazines and both function well. Only problem with the .22mag came with some CCI "Gold Dot" 50gr JHP ammo that wouldn't feed.
No problem as I prefer the Winchester 40gr JHP.
With "accurate" ammo, it's MOA or so.
Meets/met my need for a .22mag...

The .22lr Rem. 597 is/was a different story.... Mostly magazine problems. But, it's accurate too... (1/2" at 50yds, if you can find ammo !!!) But, it's had the same treatment as above.
It's OK if you don't load but 7rds in the magazines... And use GOOD High-Velocity ammo.
CCI-mini mags have been only good "popularly priced" ammo.

I've had my 597M std. weight bbl., for quite a few years now. It's not ammo picky at all, here's a common group for it,

I use 40 grain ammo, it's been 100% reliable and I've shot a lot of "pest" with it,

I've done nothing to it, other than mounting the 7.5X Leupold on it and shoot it... It's one of my best buys!

My son bought several WMR magazines for his 597 LR by mistake. If anybody wants them we can work out a very reasonable deal.

We obviously can't use them. Maybe a trade for LR Mags? Hate to see them sitting in the ammo closet doing nothing.

Email me at [email protected] as I don't get on HR too often until the snow flies.

Thanks

I used to love the .22mag, before it cost as much as .223 or 7.62x39.
I'm just wondering where you can buy new .223's for $13.00 per 50 rounds???

That's what I just paid for a box of 22 mags and I usually get them cheaper than that... BEST of all, I don't have to reload my 22 mag. ammo! yeaaaa! lol

.22 Mag around here is as low as $13/50 when it can be found, but the fancier stuff is $18+/50 locally. Two summers ago, the fancy .22 WMR was $13/50 and the Plain Jane was $8/50.

The good thing is, my .22 Mag guns are manually operated so I naturally use less of it than compared to something like 5.56 out of an auto loader.

Here ya go. Its actually about 2 cents per round cheaper than .22 mag.:)

Dont get me wrong, I love my .22mag, but I just cant bring myself to spend centerfire ammo money on a rimfire round. Glad I stocked up when ammo was $6-8/50

I can't find the price on that page for that ammo? BUT: That ammo would be fine IF I was just shooting targets, but there's NO way I want to be zinging those FMJ's around here like I do my 22 mags... My WMR is for pest control, not just to make noise and holes in paper...

I also have plenty of WMR around at the old price too, but I like to try a new box of something I don't have from time to time too... BETTER yet, the ones I bought the other day were FREE, I bought them with Cabelas points. lol

Your mileage may vary... lol

I have a 597 in .22 MAG with heavy barrel. It shoots as well as my .22 Hornet and tuned loads FWIW. As long as it has reasonable quality ammo that is.;) The WIN Dynaplate is no good in mine. All the CCI, FED, and other WIN ammo that I have tried in the 40 grain range (all I tried) has worked well.

.22 WMR Dynapoint only seems to work well in revolvers, in my limited experience. I have had nothing but bad results using that ammo in rifles.
