I am in the market for a .22 semi-auto for general plinking, I have just about decided on a 597 Remington. I would like to know the general opinion of them; i am not opposed to a 10/22 but i am partial to Remington. So what say you?

I have one. I wish I bought a 10/22 instead. The rifle shoots ok, and is mediocre in the accuracy dept. I just wish I had bought a 10/22 or a Savage bolt 22 instead.

I have one. Accuracy out of the box is better than any stock 10/22 I've seen. It doesn't have the aftermarket support of the 10/22 yet but there's still quite a bit. Not to mention its cheaper. Win win in my opinion.

Im with pelzer24.
I have one. will out shoot my 10/22 & the kids Henry youth 22. It has the big rifle feel to it. as long as i only put 8 rounds in the 10 round mag it never jams. the 30 round drum mag works great. I am very happy with my Xmas gift :)

I love my 597 now that it's broken in and is finally accurate. Mine had a cold bore flyer every time no matter what ammo until recently, which works out to about 1500 rounds through it.

My only real complaint is the action won't cycle properly if the gun is held in certain positions, like with the ejection port facing up. The only reason I say this is because I used it on a Practical Rifle type of course and it jammed when I needed to lay it on it's side. Other than this I love it!

I have been eyeballing the one in .22 Mag. Anyone have one?

Yep -- have only had a chance to put 100 rounds through mine at an indoor 25-yard range thus far, but those 100 fed flawlessly (50-50 CCI Maxi-Mag solids and HP's).

As with the .22 LR version, most 597 mag shooters don't top off the magazines from what I can tell. People seem to keep it to 5-6 rounds. Actually, I've only heard of one 597 owner who reported being able to completely top off his magazines without any trouble. The mags are very inexpensive (about $10 online), so IMHO, you're better off having extra magazines rather than trying to cram in rounds (I have 11 of them...).

Using a Nixon Prostaff scope, the rifle was shooting spot-on at that admittedly short range, until the shots started drifting. I realized the screws were coming loose on my Weaver rail. Haven't had a chance to try it out again since Loc-tite-ing the screws.

My admittedly limited impressions are that the 597 mag is a decent semiauto rifle, with a good "big rifle" feel and solid reliability, especially if one doesn't push the mags.

.22lr owner here. I top off all my mags without issue. The 3rd generation metal mags are alot better.

I don't. The guys in the 597 section at Rimfire Central would probably know tho. Great guys over there and they're a big help.

You couldn't give me one of them things!

I bought one a few years back, it jammed constantly from day one. I sold it at a loss.

I regret not buying a Ruger.

Here's mine.

And Justin, did you turn it in to Remington for the warranty? Everything I've heard says its great. Every brand has a few lemons. Just because you had a bad one doesn't mean they're all bad. Alot of ppl like them alot (me included).

I was told if I had jamming probs. That the guide rods were over torqued. which would be an easy fix. but I never had jam issues

my buddie's was a jam-o-matic but he didn't try to fix it, OR break it in.
He traded his like-new for a 10/22 beater. I'm not saying he did the right thing, he just got disgusted with the jamming issue.

i had one a few years ago. jammed a lot. sold it and got a 10/22. i like the 10/22, but my marlin 795 is much more accurate out of the box.

Years ago i bought a 597M. I fully load the clip and it has never failed to fire or properly function in any way. It shoots thumb nail size groups at 60 yards, and i like it very much.

It's my beater "pest remover" rifle for around my farm, and now many years later, it hasn't been cleaned even one time. If needed, i'd buy another in a heartbeat...

I don’t have any problems loading my magazines to the full ten rounds either. The rifle is way more accurate than I am. The only possible negative I care to mention (if you consider this a negative ) is that I hate the iron sights. I've never been a fan of buckhorn sights except for hunting, and since all I'm allowed to hunt here is paper, they had to go. Mounted a Simmons .22 Mag scope.on it and I really couldn't be happier. I ran through a whole weekend Appleseed with it and had no reliability issues at all, and this was BEFORE it even got broken in properly.

I have both 22lr and a Mag, The 22lr shots awesome and the 22mag is a 2.5-3inch group a 100 yds. The Mag has been flawless, The 22lr had some problems at first. I had to loosen the guide rods, replace the extractor with a volquartsen and now its good.

also don't max out the magazines

Mine has been great but I have been thinking about selling it since I dont shoot it anymore and have other .22s.
