remington 597?

I want to buy a .22lr for cheap plinking and am seriously considering the remington 597. Can someone please tell me a good place to buy this gun online? and how much i should be paying for it.

Hmm, I heard they are jam-o-matics. Any dirty .22LR semi auto will jam, but a friend of mine had one that had a hard time going 20 rounds without jamming. Another friend of mine has a 10/22 that he has literally never cleaned and has minimal malfunctions, if any.

If anyone has experience shooting the remmington 597, please let me know about your experience. I know that they have a bad reputation, but i heard that it was a problem with the magazine and that they fixed that.

I picked up a 597 several months ago and it has run problem free for me, as l stay away from Rem crappy ammo. It eats the Walmart Federal Bulk ammo like its candy. I think the initial problems some had with the 597 were due to defective mags. Since they corrected the mags, IMHO, they run great. I did put in a Volquartsen Target Hammer to improve the trigger pull, but that's all I've done to it.

adelgado0723, I was able to go out and shoot mine. My brother and I went through over 200 rnds and probably had about 5 jams and that was towards the end of the day. That would coinside with what Tarvis was saying that they may jam if dirty. Many times we shot the mag empty as fast as we could pull the trigger and it worked like a charm. We were shooting the Federal Hollow Points, 14 bux at Walmart for 550rds.

I found the rifle to be pretty darn accurate. Mine came with the 3-9x32 scope and it's decent for upto 50yds but anything over that you may want to get a better scope. I'm ordering a 6-12x40 soon.

Over all I found it to be a very good rifle for the money and would buy it again if I had to.

most 22 "jamming" problems are cause from being dirty, or from ammo that burns very dirty (equating to the dirty condition of the firearm) in my experience. so far, the CLEANEST inexpensive ammo i have shot is "Remington Cyclone". just a plain lead hollow-point 40 grain bullet. but shoot a box on look down the bore and in the action. they look almost as clean as when you got your rifle out of the case. shoot good ammo, keep your firearm clean, and you will not have problems. as long as your firearm is in good working order anyway. Remington is not in the habit of making junk, so i would think you will be happy with your new rifle. just make sure you clean it before you shoot it! there usually is a lot of storage "oil" in and on the rifle.

Had a running problem with mine when I first used it. I had tightened the screw that retain the bolt rails too tight. Once I learned that she's been good to go. Pretty accurate but the trigger is far from good.

A buddy of mine has a 597 and the only thing it likes to eat is stingers or any other high velocity ammo. It won't eject any of the other stuff. I'll keep my ruger 10/22. I was shooting away while he was busy cleaning and playing with the clips. Hope yours works better.

I had one and I never had any problems with it. As aka108 said, you can't over tighten the bolt retaining screws. It needs to be loose. Luckily I'd seen a post about this over on rimfire central. Some .22's are just ammo connoisseurs. I have a Ruger 22/45 that will only shoot CCI mini mags flawlessly. Everything else you get an FTE or an FTF at least once every clip.

I traded in my 597 a week after I bought it. It was an impulse buy, with no research. It would constantly fail to fire AND jam. Worst gun I ever owned.

PLEASE do yourself a HUGE favor and consider the ruger 10/22 instead. I've had several in my shop for repair or them trying to sell them for a ruger 10/22. The ONLY thing I've worked on 10/22s for is trigger job or upgrades.
