In my continuing search for a trunk gun, I'm leaing towards a 700 ADL. I want a bolt gun with sights and a synthetic stock. I'd really like a stainless gun but that's proving to be hard to find.

The 700 ADL models I've seen with a synthetic stock and irons have a matte finish on the metal. Does anyone have any experience with this finish and know how it will hold up to rust?

I call the 700 ADL matte finish a "rust attractant" finish rather than a "rust resistant" finish. I wouldn't consider it for a trunk gun unless you live in a desert.

Take the action off the stock; wipe everything metal down with Rustpruff or Shield. Reassemble: stick in trunk. Worry yet not about rust.

I was afraid of that. I have no experience with their matte finish but I know a bead blast finish even on stainless steel is bad about rust.

This rustproofing stuff like Shield, could I use it on the bore? Thanks for any help.

I have deer hunted with my matte 700 for years and have never had any trouble with rust. "Truck gun" becomes to general sometimes. Are you planning to leave it on the floorboard behind the seat? On a rack behind the seat? In the back seat? I always thought if I was going to leave a gun in the truck and never take it out, I would put it in a silicone gun sock. It's still there and handy, but somewhat protected too. But then again, I would never leave a gun to rust. Even if it was an old Mosin or SKS or some junk, I would still wipe it down often.

It will be in the trunk of my car year round. I plan on putting it in a silicone gun sock, and maybe some silica gel dessicant too. I have the same feeling about rust, even if it was just surface rust that didn't affect the functioning of the gun it would make me sick. I'd really like to have a stainless gun but it seems like no one makes a stainless bolt gun with iron sights.

Ruger K77 RSFP

Sounds like you are looking for something similar to what I have been in search of for a while. I couldn't find it on their site, but Ruger made the Model K77 RSFP All-Weather Stainless that had open sights (available in .223, .243, .270, .30-06, 7mm Rem. Mag., .300 Win. Mag. and .338 Win. Mag.). The only reason I haven't pursued one is that as far as I know, they were never made in .308.

I am not trying to hijack the thread, but if anyone has any ideas on a rust resistant, synthetic stocked rifle in .308 with open sights please share.

EDIT: Looking at the 2006 catalog, the RSFP does not seem to be listed. You may be able to find one used though.
