remington 700 build

Hello all.

I'm trying to build a custom Remington 700 but i'm only an amateur gunsmith at best, and lack a lot of knowledge I was wondering if you all could help me out.

I want to build a rifle on the Remington 700 action but from articles I've read they say you should start a rifle with a good blueprinted action id rather not buy a whole rifle if i don't have to id like to just buy a Remington 700 action that has already been blueprinted and is very nice. but I don't have a clue where to get one.

I would prefer to do it in 30-06 but here is another problem of all the stocks I've seen I like this one the best.

They use ACIS magazines and from as far as I've been able to gather they don't have em in 30-06 :/ id go to a smaller caliber like the .308 Winchester but I've all ready built a very nice ar 10 and wanted a larger caliber so any thoughts on the .300 Winchester or .338 Lapua would be appreciated.

I plan on using a Krieger barrel, and a Timmy trigger. I haven't even started looking into a scope for this rifle. I intended this rifle to be a tactical man / zombie killer in the event of chaos :/ if that at all helps.

Any thoughts, advice, or opinions would be nice.

Unless you have the tools, know how, and patience to deal with a custom build, you MAY be biting off more then you can chew.

The 700 action is simpler and easier to accurize then many of its contemporaries, but it still requires alot of machining to get the most out of it. True blueprinting of the action requires correctly aligning all the surfaces of the action and cost some serious cash. You can buy semi-custom or full custom actions, based on the 700 but they will cost you a whole lot also. If your looking for best o the best, then having a knowledgeable smith do the work is a good idea. With the cost of just action work, i would be leery of installing my own barrel (a highend one at that), and chambering it. Its not that is really that hard, or incorrectable if you make a mistake, but for the cost id have a smith do it.

If you want to get your feet wet, and see what it takes, id suggest doing a tacticool build, and saving some of the money. If your first one comes out as good as you would like, you can probably sell it for near the cost of parts and
move on to a higher end build.

As to rounds, if already have a .308 id suggest sticking with it for now, same ammo etc. If you really want something new, there is nothing wrong with a long range rifle in a magnum cal, i would chose the .300 or 7mm remington due to cost reasons, but thats me.

Id also forgoten what i think is my favorite .30 magnum, the .308 Norma. I like the design better then the .300 winchester, and when i get around to re-barreling my savage its on the rather short list.

I wasn't gonna attempt the work my self I was looking more for a place where i can just buy the action ready to go.

Im no where near skilled enough to do any real gunsmithing :/ and to be honest i dont need the most expensive top of the line match super target action or anything im just looking to get like 1 moa out of this rifle 1/2 moa if the gods are just

The 700 is not an AR-15; You cannot just slap parts together and expect the gun to work the way you desire (or work at all).

I do a fair amount of amateur smithing and have lathes, mills and the like. But I'd still pay a competent smith to barrel my action with a 700.

While the JAE is a great stock, that sucker is heavy.

While it isn't light, check out the AICS. Straight drop in chassis that is do it yourself.

Manners has a similar system I believe.

As for the rest of the file, I would send your action to some one like APA or GAP or any of the other many competent gun smiths out their, and have them true it up and cut and barrel up the action. Then slap it in the stock yourself. Techo the post above, it's not an ar-15, you can't just slap it together and expect it to work the way you desire.

When I read your first post, I thought it sounded like you wanted to build a rifle. My understanding now is that you want to have a rifle built.

If this is right, you don't need to start out with a blue printed action, unless it's going to get you some sort of tangible benefit. I mean if you are shooting at a level of competition where the difference between first and third place is measured in thousandths of an inch and your shooting skill is up to snuff, then a blue printed action may be worth while. For most, it isn't.

I've had two rifles built using stock 700 actions and both are very sub MOA shooters. The only thing I paid my builder to do was fit the barrel and cut the chamber. You can do everything else yourself, with common tools and some patience.

As for the action, I'd scour the internet for a used Remington ADL. I've seen many for $300 or less.

BTW, Krieger is the way to go. Not that there aren't other good barrels out there, but I've been using Kriegers for a while now. The builder that I used recommended them to me. They've all been good shooters.

Before you order a barrel from Krieger, check their inventory list. They may just have what you want. I got my first barrel from them three days after ordering it. The second one took about six months.

Go to the classifieds at Benchrest Central. There will be actions and complete rifles for sale there, cheaper than what you will spend to have it built.

hmmmmmm my whole point of this endevor is i wanted an accurate 30-06 rifle that has 10 round magazines :/ prehaps if theres a rifle that allready meets my needs out there ill look into some factory guns
