I am looking to buy/build a Remington 700 rifle, that fills these needs for under $2500.

Accurate out to 600 yards
20" barrel
Sub MOA
Remington 700 action or Surgen Action (preferable the Surgen)
Be able to go through the mud, dust, rain, snow, and.. well you get the idea.
The stock should be able to shoot from any position so no prone only stocks.
Detachable Magazine that takes Accuracy Imternational 5 or 10 round magazines.

This is what I've thought about, I'm thinking the Surgen action cost $1200.

Remington 700 in .308 (7.62x51mm)
Bartlien Barrel in 20", .900" barrel, strait contour, 5R rifleing
Badger Ordinance M5 Detachable Magazine with a H.S. Precision stock or other (please give me suggestions, no glass bedding needed)
Shielin Trigger tuneed to 3.0-3.5lbs

Except for the detachable magazine Remington makes this rifle already; it is the 700 XCR Compact Tactical. Not sure what you would have to do to modify it for a detachable magazine.

you can buy a stock 700 SPS tactical for 550 and put the badger mag kit on it and be under 1000 and do what you ask.. the trigger is sweet and adjusts easy.. It does not have all the fancy names but does what you ask..

Yea I thought about buying a SPS Tactical and modifing it. I was just unsure of the barrel quallity of the stock rifle, I've heard it's good accuracy out of the box.

Now I have a question about the stock, with my specifications what would be better a streamlined stock like the base rifle, or the Accuacy International stock, or an H.S. stock of some kind.

Thanks for the input, I've just always wanted to build a custom rifle starting only with a Surgen Action.

But which stock would be best, I think a more streamlined stock would be better for positional shooting, but I'd look wierd with a 10 round mag on it though, aulthuogh a 5 round would be an option.

Is the XCR Compact Tactical worth the exra $$$, $1200 compared to $600 is it worth it the comparisons are this from my understanding:

XCR CT: 416 stainless steel with Trinite barrel finish with fluting, and an OD green stock, which is from what I can tell an H.S. stock (correct me if I'm wrong here however)

SPS T: baisic Remington tactical style barrel (not stainless steel) and Houge overmolded stock

Both rifles feature the X-Mark trigger, floorplate system, baisic 700 action, and the price is about a $600 difference, so is the factory stock and barrel worth the extra $600?

I have the sps, I figured when i bought it I was just getting a cheap rilfe to have fun with and modify to make it better as I go.. Well I love it as it is.. I love the houge stock, it is accurate as can be.. And to top it off it was cheap.. I would like a mag though.. Also the trigger was amazing.. I here all the talk about people getting rid of the x mark.. I love it.. adjusted it just under 2 lbs and it breaks like glass.. it has been a super fun gun..

I guess you have to figure out what features you like and don't like on the XCR.

It would probably cost about $600, and a lot of time, to replace the stock, finish the metal surfaces to meet your "mud, dust, rain, snow" requirement and have the barrel cut down to 20" on the SPS. The stock may be a wash if the XCR stock has to be replaced to get the detachable magazine option.

I don't believe that accuracy is an issue with the XCR since I have seen report of 1/2 MOA groups with factory ammo.

I personally don't mind customizing my firearms to meet my specific needs, but when I do I generally start with an off the shelf product that is as close as I can get. It saves time and money in the long run.

the SPS tactical is 20".. And no need to refinish anything.. And the stock is about as tough as any with the overmoulded rubber.. It is pretty good as far as stock bedding too..

So far I have gotten 1/2"moa three shot groups and sub moa 5 shot groups

Just dont shy away from the SPS tactical because of the price.. I think you get way more than with alot of other rifles.. Sure you can do alot more with it too.. But the end result is it shoots really well

yea, i do like the xmark trigger i got one on my sps varmit, which btw i kicked myself in the a$$ since i turned down the SPS Tactical. i just wish i knew how to adjust my trigger down to where i dont have some take up. does anyone have a link for this.

But can anyone tell me about the shape of stock I should get iv'e got an H.S. Thumbhole stock for my varmit, but 90% of the time shoot in the prone position, so its appropriate for the use.

im just concerned about the forend of the Houge stock, because I think it flexes alot when you use a front end support such as a bipod.
Thats the only reason I was leaning towards the XCR stock, and with H.S stocks being $350-$400 for the non-adjustable ones plus a magazine will be be about $600-$700.
So I geuss i'd be cheaper to buy the sps tactical and modify it instead of buying the xcr and still paying another $400 for a magazine.

it takes all of about 5 minutes to clearance the front of the stock so it does not touch with bipod.. I have seen pat4x4's.. it does not touch in anyway shape or form and still looks factory new.. He said he did it in like 5 minutes with a dremal..

Instead of a dremel, just wrap some sandpaper around the appropriate sized socket, or a piece of dowel. Takes about 15 minutes, and harder to screw up.

Well, I don't have any tools live a dremle, but like the lost post said I could open it up with some sandpaper, just remove some of the aluminum bedding ever so slightly.

Does any one have a Houge stock compared to a H.S. stock to compare?

I thought about putting a regular one (HS) with a M5 detachable magazine or an Accuacy International stock on it for $100 extra.

The HS plus magazine system is about $900 and a AI stock cost about $1000 and the folding one cost roughly $1200, but these already come with the magazine system.

Can the other two even compare to the AI, just wondering.:)

I vote for the SPS Tactical
Accurate out to 600 yards
20" barrel
Sub MOA
Remington 700 action or Surgen Action (preferable the Surgen)
Be able to go through the mud, dust, rain, snow, and.. well you get the idea.
The stock should be able to shoot from any position so no prone only stocks.
Detachable Magazine that takes Accuracy Imternational 5 or 10 round magazines.

Ok, My rifle is Great!!! Here is what I have done...

Changed the stock... I love the HS and hate the houge....
Tuned the Trigger- its now at like >2#
Added Millett TRS-1
Tactical 1 piece base and 6lug rings
Harris Bipod
Cheapo sling

And it is very accurate, and I honestly Trust this gun!

with your price tag, you could get a New stock, a Badger Ord. setup, Good Glass, and even a new barrel if you were not happy and you would still have the 700 action...

Just make sure what ever you do... take some pics!!!!!!!:D

Well, unless this thread stays active for a year and learn how to post pics. then y'all won't see it since I only got about $400 right now and I am going to buy everything at once (rifle, mounts, rings, scope whitch will be a Super Sniper scope, stock and mag. system) so as you can see I got a ways to go.

Still though does anyone here have any experience with the AI stock, are they justified by $1000+, because that's ALOT of money to me.

If I don't get an AI I'll probaly get the stock picured above with a D.D. Ross floorplate or a M4 from Badger Ordinance, or I'll get a vertical, or thumbhole stock from H.S. or Bell & Carlson medalist stock.

BTW for the rings and mount I'm getting the Badger Ordinance supplies.

No experience... but they go for alot cheaper on ebay/ Gunbroker like $800 ish for a v1.5

Yep, super easy to clearance the houge stock and almost impossible to screw up.. I used a carbide burr in my air grinder.. Really super simple.. Came out clean.. the rubber just shapes so well you can't screw it up.. I was going to put a differant stock on but with the houge pillar bed set up it really is not bad.. And I Love the way the rubber feels.. I like how it sticks to everything, It is quite in a hunting situation..

I do like the bell and carlson stock if I change it some time.. the hand hook one..

I orderd an H.S. thumbhole for my SPS Varmit 3 weeks ago Monday..... still waiting on it. If I like it a hole lot I'll buy H.S. again.

I've been thinking, do I really need a magazine system..?.?.., no unfortuatly I don't, they just look really cool, and would be better for SHTF. But I belive a floorplate system is more reliable. The floorplate would probally be better while using a sling for position shooting, I was reading a "Tactical Weapons" magazine (May-April 2009, pgs. 14-19, so you can see it yourself if you want to) and the author of this one article (the author is in the millitary, so I respect his thoughts) was building a rifle for urban warfare and he used a "streamlined" stock (McMillian A1-3 with 5 round magazine) for positional shooting. This is why I thought to not have the mag. system since I won't be fending off multiple deer from my comrades.:) And I only load 1 bullet when I go hunting anyway.
So I figure the H.S. one or the Houge will do, aulthough I might opt for a vertical griped one.
Thanks, and please keep up the replies.

The search function is your friend. Just remember the title or look at your list of threads that you have started. Make a new post and it is right up on top where folks will see it.

Ok, thanks for all the replies, here's what I think I'll do when money permits:

SPS Tactical in .308
Badger Ordinance rings (medium) and mount
Super Sniper 10x40mm scope with the flip-up covers
And possibly an H.S. Presicion stock with a Harris 6'-9' Bipod and a Eagle Industries Shooters Stock Pack, and either a D.D. Ross, or Mk4 Badger Ordinace floorplate system, but I might not get the stock, it dependes on how much I like the Houge Overmolded stock.

I'll put a new thread up when it's done if I remember, not to leave all y'all hanging, and of course learn how to post pictures to.

Now for the tactical 30-06.?.?.?.?.?., oh yea 1 rifle at a time.:)

Thank you for all the opinions.:)

I think sps tac is 223 & 308 only... I vote 308, if your set on 30-06 I think sps varmint is almost the same, just cut down the barrel, besides, you are changeing the stock anyways
