Any of you guys familier with the 700 5-R? How would you rate this gun? I have heard that its supposed to be just a little better than the PSS, is this true? I have read about what exactally it is as far as the rifling goes, but I want to know if this is a comprable gun to the PSS or not.

Thanks guys.

The 5R 700 is an offering that seems to have a good rep., but it is a Rem. produced 5R barrel. It is not a Mike Rock produced barrel. You get a SS action and bbl in a HSP supplied stock. The reputation for a good shooting rifle is there with any other factory 700.

I had 700VS that was a good shooter, and it now wears a real Mike Rock 5R barrel, the gun shoots way better. We are talking less then an inch at 300!

The restraining factors of out of the box accuracy are the bedding block of the HSP stock, the alignment of the scope base screw holes, the crown on the barrel, and the nut pulling the trigger on the gun.

It is not a Mike Rock produced barrel.

Does he do 5R barrels too?
I thought that 5R rifled barrels were mostly done by Obermeyer.

At any rate, I gues I just discovered another supplier for future projects. Obermeyer and Rock creek are within a few hours drive for me, Krieger is almost witin walking distance. :)

Mike does 5R barrels! :)

Correction.

Mike Rock is 5R barrels. Well, after the Russians introduced the profile, that is...

Boots Obermeyer claims to have pioneered the same 5R (5 grooves, Rounded) cut-rifling profile, too.

Regardless of who introduced or perfected the concept, 5R barrels are considered quite desirable for their accuracy and resistance to fouling.

Correct on all of the above. It's not a bad rifle, but I wouldn't pay extra just to get the 5R model. If you can get a it pretty close to the same price as a standard 700 than go for it. Otherwise, you're better off shooting dead the factory barrel and replacing it with a Mike Rock 5R.

I'm thinking of doing the same. What loads are you shooting to get that accuracy? I'm thinking of just using 175 SMKs, and maybe doing so experimentation with 178 AMAXs.

I've had 2 of the 700 5-R rifles, they shot decent. But, not as well as my 700 PSS.

One of them I had relieve A LOT of the barrel channel before even attempting to zero it. It should have been a fully free floated barrel, but it wasn't. Maybe it was a Monday morning or Friday afternoon build.

I've heard of excellent groups through them, mostly by handloaders. Pretty much one hole groups.

Bottom line is... it's still just a factory rifle. It's good but there are better.

10-6-10 Just finished breaking mine in. WOW. My last three "three shot groups" at 100 yds were all "In one little ragged hole".
I'm sure it's the luck of the draw with these barrels. I've heard some are just average, but thank God I got a great one.

I've heard other people saying that that's a rumor that isn't actually true.

I believe it's a rumor. There's no way they'd have enough reject barrels to produce enough guns to be their own model. What did they do with all those thousands of reject barrels before the 5-r was introduced? They'd have been losing money with that high of reject rate.

The M24 and the commercial 5-R are a different profile, and it would likely cost Remington more $$$ to turn a rejected hammer-forged barrel to a different profile, than it would to just hammer out another barrel.

Since Rem only makes a limited run of 5Rs once a year I am inclined to believe the rumor. However my 5r .308 with a 16x Mk4 in Badger Ord mounts and bottom metal and a Jewell trigger set at 1 # shoots Fed Gold match into 1/2 MOA at 200 yards all day long as long as conditions hold and I do my part.

The rumor that I heard is that the first ones were made with M24 barrels that had been rejected because the profile did not meet specs. I don't remember where I read about it, but it sounded like a one time glitch.

I doubt that the current production is made with reject M24 barrels, just barrels with similar rifling and the varmint profile. I have one, performance is in line with my 700VLS. Most 5 shot groups will be less than 1", with no modifications, but I am not the best shooter in the world so other shooters may be capable of better.

One nice thing, the rifling (at least on the earliest models) is 1:11.25, not the standard 1:12, so you can use somewhat longer bullets, mine likes 168 and 175 gr match hollow points.
