I am in need of a muzzleloader, I found a used good priced Remington 700 and was about to buy it but found a post that said they were not what they appear to be. Let's hear it from someone that has or had one. Thanks Mac

I used to have one several years ago. Didn't care for it because it was a .50.. Shot okay to me. Used 2ff powder. The one I had was just like the Remington 7mm Mag bdl and the Remington .300 Mag bdl. (bdl just mean's it's the model with checkered wood) I know it was just like them because I owned both of them before I moved into .45 inline muzzle loaders. Pretty good range, recoil easy to deal with, shot real good. Very dependable. I myself thought it was more accurate and easier to handle than the Knights..Just me. I'vd pretty well got everything I need but if they started making it in .45 caliber I know I'd buy one. I used it a lot in Alaska and it done me real good....

Thanks GotC, I believe bdl stands for having a hinged floorplate also, tha adl doesn't have a floorplate and you have to bolt and eject live rounds not shot. Thanks for your response. Mac

You're welcome. Alway's worked the unshot rounds back out of the action using the bolt. Mine pretty well stayed loaded all the time anyway. Anyway, the Remington 700 series is a good rifle including the muzzle loader. bdl is checkered model. adl is plain wood model....

GOTC,
Remington did make the 700 ML in .45 caliber. I saw a stainless one on consignment at my local gunshop about 2 months ago. It was very nice but just a little heavier than the .50 because of the smaller bore which made it seem "too heavy" for me to carry around hunting, but maybe not for others. It already had a scope mounted on it too.

Encoreman,
There's some dedicated Remington 700 ML shooters on the huntungnet.com black powder forum along with a number of range report threads and posts critiquing it. A black powder forum search can easily be done there to obtain some of the first hand information which is being sought. :)

I had a chance to spend the day on range with 50 cal Remington 700 BP. I used a benchrest and BP pellets 75 Gains. It would at 100 yards give you a group that would be touching.

Articap, thank you and I mean it to. I had no idea and I know that back then when I had one (pretty new on the market when I bought it) to the best of my knowledge .50 was all it came in. I am going to start digging around and see if I can come across one. Thanks again....

Black toe knives..Yes, I believe you and I know they will believe you on this thread to...Now! If I had told somebody on here that, then a lot of them would have jumped on here trying to argue with me and practically calling me a damn liar!..Yes sir it's a good rifle. Believe me, I know what work's and what don't work if it's something I own or did own or checked out. Articap said they made them in .45 caliber. I didn't know but I do know that I have read Articap on here a lot and I know he's got his head and ass wired together and if he tell's somebody something then they can go with it. I'm going to start hunting around these online stores and catalogs and whatnot and see if I can find one. I don't really need one but I'll damn sure buy me one sometime around around Christmas or in January if I find them....

I found one. (.45). I say again, FORTY FIVE CALIBER! Sitting almost right under my nose the whole time. Brand new and still in the box. A rancher has 2 of them (had 2 of them!) and he said he would sell me one with an extra set of sights and an extra bolt. He said I can just pay it off as I can if that's what I needed to do. I assured him I will have it paid off by the 5th of Febuary next year and he said that would be fine. He even brought it over here for me. Blued steel, pretty as all get out and full size. The rifle and extra bolt and sights are laying right here on the bed. I have a good scope to mount on it. If I knew where my USB cable was for my camera I would post a picture of it. I'm going into town in about a week and I'll try to remember to buy one. OWWwwwaaahoooo!!....What was that Gomer Pyle used to say? Shezam! Thanky, thanky, thanky, Sgt. Articap!!....

Holy smoke, you've discovered a buried treasure-trove!
And your excitement about it is so infectious that now I'm getting all giddy about it too!! :D:D:D

What's wrong with the bullet makers? I'vd got sabots ranging from 100+ grains on through the 200's on up to 300, which I hardly ever shoot. I don't hardly get after anything heavy enough to warrant a 300, not any more. You know, I'vd got several different makes around here but believe it or not one of the best ones I'vd found is the 'extended range sabots' from Cabela's. (don't cost much either). They alway's seem to load easy and I'vd never had an accuracy problem with them. Plenty of stopping power to. Just me....

Didn't say there's anything "wrong" with the bullet makers.
There are just FAR more choices, especially with premium (as in "BIG game tough") with the .50.
Were there as many choices in .45, I may call it the best North American BP caliber. Plenty of energy, a bit less recoil, and most of us won't complain about flatter trajectory!
But, untill a more diverse selection of bullets become available. I'm calling "the .50" better.

Yeah, guess you're right about that part of it. Like when I was into 'modern' firearms I alway's preferred the Remington 7mm Mag to the 30-06 even though with the '06 you could buy a round for anything from a grasshopper to an elephant. I took my Remington .45 out this morning but I never shot it. That had been my intention but first I ran into a bunny rabbit and then I saw some squirrels so out of my pocket came the Uberti Colt .31 Pocket and that was the end of the Remington shooting. It's over there in the corner now still loaded. I have a small balloon pulled over the muzzle to keep the dust and whatall from getting into the barrel. I'll get around to firing it in a day or so I guess. I haven't even put the scope on yet....

I had a 700ML in 45cal. It was a great shooting gun and shouldered just like my regular 700 rifle. It was very accurate and never let me down.

There was a couple of things I didn't like about the gun and I'm a Remington man. The inside of the bolt gets dirty and has to be taken apart and cleaned or the spring inside the bolt will rust. The other thing is the nipple that the 209 primer sits in. You have to take a small pic that comes with the rifle to pic the primer out of the nipple. I guess you could use the #11 nipple and eliminate that problem but I don't know how the #11 would work with the pellets. So in a nut shell, I sold it and bought one of the break-open models because it was easier to clean and didn't have to use the pic to remove the primers after being fired.

GENTLEMAN OF THE CHARCOAL, please go over to HuntingNet as Articap linked earlier. Look up Sabotloader while you are there and get a conversation going with him. He knows lots of good things you should know about the 700ML and will be glad to share.

Things I can recommend right now... find the bolt disassembly tool that Remington sold as a fairly inexpensive accessory - you MUST clean that bolt internally and the tool will simplify things. The Remington 209 setup for the rifle puts out far too much blowback - try to find one of the Canadian-made conversions on the Bay as they work much better. In any case, you will need to protect the underside of your scope regardless of ignition used. A piece of duct tape will do the trick or you can get more exotic. I like to use bicycle innertubes cut to make a stretch fit over the scope and attach via the turrets. Works well but you get to smell burning rubber on occasion.

I had one of the original 700ML rifles with a 22" barrel several years ago. The only truly bad thing about the rifle was the extra time spent cleaning the bolt. It was very accurate. My son-in-law talked me out of it and I never saw it again.

Underclocked and K.A.T. Thank both of ya'll very much for the information and the offers of help. I will go to the website and see if I can get a conversation going with that guy...I already have a tool to help me get the bolt apart without the spring flying across the room or something. I was really glad to get the info about the scope. I may not even put the scope on. Probably will but I might not. What I will probably end up doing in firing it a few times and then cleaning it real good and putting it away. I don't shoot the 'big' rifles much anymore and when I do I usually reach for a .45 Traditions. I'vd got 5 .45's now counting the Remington (2 CVA's and 2 Traditions) and they are all standard bolt action. I'vd never shot a 'break open' and don't think I would like it. I'm afraid I would never be able to trust it. I'd alway's be afraid some of the hot gas would blow back into my face and that would make me flinch involuntarily every time I squeezed the trigger. Usually the heaviest (longest) 'rifle' I ever reach for nowadays is a .44 Cattleman's Carbine but I am real proud to own this Remington. I had the Remington .50 while I was living in Alaska (didn't know they made the .45 then) and it worked real fine. I don't really care that much for a .50 so I traded it to an Eskimo for $50.00, a quart of Wild Turkey, and a snowmobile that needed a new track. I spent the money, drank the whiskey and put a new track on the snowmobile and then traded it to another Eskimo for $400.00, 2 quarts of Jack Daniels whiskey and an Israeli Desert Eagle .357!!..Thank ya'll again for the help....

I don't know if yours is set up for the 209 primers or not, but I never had a need to use them. They're supposed to produce some extra velocity but they can cause a crud ring if using 777.
I"m still shooting #11's in my inline and prefer them. And have never had a misfire with them and I don't shoot pellets.
Numrich Gun Parts has 3 different nipples for the Remington including for musket caps and #11's.

http://www.e-gunparts.com/products_new.asp?CatID=4330

Without using the 209's there should be less blow back through the nipple and maybe less fouling residue getting into the bolt.
Loading with a clean powder and a weaker primer should work well enough.
I've got a bunch of 209 primers so someday I'll probably shoot with 209's, but until then I don't miss not using what I haven't tried. ;)

Articap, I use 209's in the Traditions and CVA I shoot but the Remington is set up just like the old Knights. I can use a cap. I don't know for sure if he had it set up that way or if it was just built that way but I suspect Remington built it that way because the rifle was still in the box and I could look down the bore for myself with my light and tell it had never been fired even though the cattle rancher told me so as well. I will be firing Triple Seven and since it's a .45 I will be using 3fff. Loose powder thrown right out of the flask....

Pretty neat looking. (If I only knew exactly what I was looking at!!) I was planning on shooting mine some today but it was around zero degrees when I awakened this morning. I haven't bothered to check the weather yet but it could very well have went below zero. I'm going to fire it in a couple of days I guess. It's supposed to warm up a bit when this storm blow's on through. I have some targets I ran off on my printer. Got them off of the computer here. Don't remember who supplied the link but I thanked him. I don't normally bother with paper targets but I think I'm going to stick one of them up and shoot with iron sights. (open sights, no scope). I can just go ahead and shoot offhand.
I'm pretty proud to own this Remington. I don't know, I'vd just alway's liked the 700 series a lot. I'vd sure used them a lot (7mm Mag, .300 Win Mag, and the .50.. .50 was dependable and as accurate as one could wish for but I don't like a .50) back out through the Yukon and Alaska, back before I got disgusted with the modern ammo supply situation and the weight and bulk and whatnot and went totally to blackpowder firearms....
