I am completely new to rifles. I've shot shotguns before, but never rifles. I've wanted to get into longer range shooting for fun, so i figure what better way than to buy my way into it :)

Anyway, this will be just a learner target gun for me.

I was desiring a .300 Win Mag, but I came to the realization that that is probably too much for a beginner?

That leaves me with a .308. I am thinking about the Remington SPS-V
http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire/model-700/model-700-sps-varmint.aspx

Any insight on this gun? Or should I try to find something used? I like the 26" barrel though.

Eventually, probably next year, I will be going with an AICS stock, so the factory will just be a temporary place holder for me.

I would like to be able to shoot decent range if my abilities get good enough. This leaves me with scopes.

I was thinking the Leupold VX2 6-18X40MM
http://www.leupold.com/hunting-shooting/scopes/vx-2-riflescopes/vx-2-6-18x40mm-adj-obj/

But i don't know if that is what I need.
Any help at all would be appreciated,
Thanks!

Looks great! I absolutely love the look of the AICS stock. I wish I could find someone around here with a .308 that I could shoot. How do you like it? What optic are you using on it?

That is actually the standard stock. I just painted it until I can afford something better

I love the rifle. It is a soft shooter, and is quite accurate. I have a Millett TRS-1 on top of it. No really "high dollar" parts on the gun, but it works for what I do with it.

Are you going to be reloading for this gun? Currently finding any .308 ammo is next to impossible, much less finding some at a decent price.

I would also recommend the SPS-V in .243. For your first rifle, it is a good round, and is capable of shooting at extended ranges. It uses a .308 case, necked down to a 6mm bullet. Lately, 6 and 6.5mm's have been kings of the long range circuit.

Doh! Phone screen..... from the back it looked like it, haha.
That is really all I am looking for. Something lower end that I can play with.

Thought about that one too, but eventually I think I want to build a nicer .300 Win Mag.

I had one in .223 that was pretty rough. It shot accurately, but the bolt operation was gritty. It doesn't feel clean like older 700's.

Mine in .223 would not shoot, until recently. I put 600 rounds through it before it settled down to good groups, didn't like any bullet but a 50 Sierra. Now it shoots a 40 Vmax in one hole. Bedded it and stoned the trigger right away but the barrel is just now coming around. Not like the Remingtons of old.

For about $200.00 more, you can purchase the M700 Police model, and not have to think about future upgrades to the stock or anything else. I would also consider the M70 Stealth, and some of the other heavy barrel .308s. The M700 is a nice platform, but has a rather "anemic" extractor. I have had several break, once while hunting. Let us know what you decide.

I think it's a good starting point. Some places also sell packages with a scope too unless you are set on the Millett. I have never shot one but I have held one with a mounted scope and cycled the action and I thought it had good ergonomics and a smooth action. Fwiw if you have $2-300 extra to spend on the rifle I recommend the Savage 10 FCP-K. If not then you have a good starting point for a long range gun in my book!

OP where do you call home???

I have many different 308's to choose, Rem, Savage, FNH, Sako, Customs along with several models of AICS chassis's. Barrels from 30 inches down to 16 inches. Suppressed and unsuppressed. Always willing to introduce someone to shooting and let em test drive different makes and models and letting them make a decission with actual "hands on" instead of blindly picking one from a store or internet forum.

No matter what I go with, I fully intent to go with an accuracy international stock in the future. I even still kick around the idea of a .300 win mag, but would you all say that wouldn't be a great starter?

I am in NE Ohio.
Thanks everyone! I went shopping today, and the two local places didn't have any 700's in .300 or .308
I could just keep saving and buy even better, I really don't know when I am going to buy. Just going to keep throwing money into my savings account until I find what I want.

Yes, shank, a .300 Win Mag is not a good starting point. Recoil is excessive and ammunition cost is excessive. Heck, the best way to get into shooting rifles would be with a .22 LR so you already stepping above that a good bit. Leave the .300 Win Mag on the shelf.... For now.
