I have been searching for days and cannot find a lot of facts on how these rifles shoot. I'm considering one in 204 but not being a traditional shaped barrel I'm a bit weary.

I played with one side by side with an SPS SS and the price difference is only $30 as there is a sale. I liked the feel of the VTR pre-scoped over the SPS SS but I'd like to hear some REAL stories about how the VTR shoots, specifically after shooting lots of rounds and heating up the barrel. Does the triangle barrel do worse, better or similar to a traditional bull barrel?

BTW - the VTR I am looking at has a non-ported 24" barrel.

The article is fair and accurate. I have the VTR, my son has the SPS Varmit, both in .308. Both have the same scope, a Nikon Buckmaster 6X18 with Mil Dot. The SPS is more accurate, but the VTR is lighter, and can shoot <1" groups @ 100 yards. More load development is required, as both rifles like 165 and 168 bullets.

I like mine. Shoots good, but I have not rapid fired the it to heat it up.

I really like mine in 22-250.

It is easily sub-MOA with handloads.

Its nice to shoot off a bench for a while, then pop off my bipod and have a handy coyote gun.

The only downside to me is the semi-flimsy stock. A lot of people don't like the muzzle porting. It is a tad louder, but with hearing protection you don't notice it. It is really nice to see your hits and recoil is nearly non-existent.

I haven't seen any without the ports though. I say get it, i don't think you will be disappointed.

I actually read that Sniper Central review and totally discounted the rifle a while ago because of it. That was a year ago when I was buying my 308 which is an SPS Tactical. And their review was spot on for that rifle too - the Hogue stock touches the barrel while I shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards, sums up the rifle right there, nothin fancy but the dang thing can shoot for that price.

The flimsy stock thing is a common complaint but whether I get the SPS or VTR I get the same stock so thats a wash, might get swapped later anyway.

I actually thought I was already sold on the SPS, then I handled the VTR and it threw me for a loop, I thought the same thing Fireman said, that I could use this rifle for more than just one thing because its somewhat handy. I'm telling you its an interesting package that VTR, blew my skirt up to say the least.

On the subject of stocks... The VTR stock has a pressure point at the very tip, two little nubs that contact the barrel on each side. I Dremeled those off and call me crazy but I think my groups actually shrunk a little.

I have the 700ADL Varmint which I picked up st Dick's for $419. With the "Remington" scope I have managed .69moa. Yesterday I received my Mueller Tactical APT scope. Can't wait to see what it does on the range.
